BATTLE OF THE BOOKS The Battle of the Books team is selected each year from students with the top Accelerated Reader point totals for the first AR school contest. Teachers of these students are consulted for a recommendation that they be on the team. Letters are then sent home with an invitation to join. Practice sessions are held twice a week from late fall until the county competition in March. The team is coached by the school media coordinator. Students read from a list of books selected by the North Carolina School Library Media Association which sponsors the competition. The list usually consists of 25 to 27 books, and team members are expected to read ALL of the books. Students are required to write questions for 3 to 5 books. Media coordinators in Harnett County also submit questions. Students practice competing in teams answering those questions. There is a county, regional, and state competition each year. Harnett Central Middle School won the Harnett County competition in the following years: 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. The 1999 team won the regional competition. The 2005 team won the regional competition and came in second in state competition.
