LEVELED READING BOOK LIST

Please refer to your child's report card for their current reading level. Review the lists below and click on the appropriate leveled list. Remember, it is fine for students to pick books that are below their level to keep their interest in reading, but it is ESSENTIAL that you assure they also have access to books on their level and are reading them frequently too.

*Have you read it lots of times before?

*Do you understand the story very well?

*Do you know almost every word?

*Can you read it smoothly?

*Are you reading without thinking?

* Is the book new to you?

*Do you understand a lot of the book?

*Are there just a few words a page you don't know?

*When you read, are some places smooth and some choppy?
*Do you have to think as you read?

* Are there more than five words on a page you don't know?

*Are you confused about what is happening in most of this book?

* When you read, does it sound really choppy.

* Are you finding that you're not enjoying this book?

**As discussed during conferences, your child's reading level may change over the summer. As you check out books from the library, use the above chart to determine if you need to change the level of books you are choosing for your child. Please keep in mind that it is not unusual for a child to read a little below their current reading level when they are at home. Do not be alarmed if this happens. Monitor your child's reading progress. If they read below their level for several weeks and you do not see improvements, please contact me and we can discuss strategies to get them back on track. Please use the reading strategies provided in the materials sent home in your child's summer packet to assist them in their continued reading development.
