Directions: Choose a method of studying your spelling words from this menu for Tuesday through Thursday. If it is a method where there is no writing, please write down the underlined boldfaced title for your child and initial it to show that they did complete a spelling activity. (Please write this on your child's behavior log under the night that they choose an activity that does not require writing.) Your child may only choose ONE activity each week that does not require them to write / show their work. (i.e. singing words, air writing, spelling in sign language, etc.) Keep in mind that it is still imperative that students can identify the correct sort that their words belong in. Thus, after they practice their spelling, they should not only be able to spell them, but should also be able to sort them accordingly. Don't use the same studying technique twice and be SURE to take a practice spelling test on Thursday evenings to get ready for Friday's spelling test! ************************************************************************************ Spelling Pizza- Draw a large circle on a piece of paper. Sort your spelling word cut outs and make each one a topping for your pizza (for example, the ch blends could be pepperonis, the sh blends could be mushrooms, etc). Write your words inside the pizza and draw your toppings around it. Color it when you are finished. - This could also be done with other foods as well: salads, banana splits, ice cream sundaes, and many more! Type 'Em - Type all of your spelling words several times in different fonts on your computer (if you have one). Sign Your Words - Use your sign language to sign your words! Use the online sign language sheet or the sign language sheet in your B.E.E. Book to help you. Have an adult sign your book that you did this. Fancy Letters - Use old magazines, catalogs, or newspapers to cut out letters and glue them down to spell your words! Spelling Baseball - Draw four bases on a piece of paper or set up four chairs to be the bases. Pitcher selects a word. If batter can spell it correctly, he moves forward one base. If batter cannot spell word, he remains where he is. Child receives point every time he passes home base. Snowman or Scarecrow (Hangman) - Snowman is a nonviolent version of Hangman. In your spelling homework book, draw a snowman with hat and three buttons. Play like hangman (don't forget to draw the lines to show how many letters the chosen word has), but erase a part of the snowman for each guess. The object is to guess the word before the snowman melts. You can use any character for this. The kids love using frogs. J Stair step / Mountain Words - Add one letter for each step! ABC Order - Write your words in alphabetical order. - OR- Write them in reverse alphabetical order. Trace Around - Print one of your spelling words neatly. Take a colored pen and draw an outline around the word, closely following the shapes of the letters. Close your eyes and remember the shape. Now try to write the word. Write 3x - Write each word neatly 3 times! Spelling City - A great online resource that allows you to type in your words and learn, play games, or take a test! Make sure you mix up the order of your words! Riddle Me - Write a riddle for each word. Connect the Dots - Make a square of 4 rows of dots with 4 dots in each row. Before taking a turn, the player must spell a spelling word. If the word is correct, he connects two dots. When a player forms a square, he can write his initials in the box. Player with most squares at the end wins. Story, Story - Write a story using ALL of your spelling words. Sentence Please - Write a sentence for each spelling word. Check for capital letters at the beginning and punctuation at the end. Finger Tracing - Use your finger to spell out each of your words one letter at a time on your Mom or Dad's back. Then it's YOUR turn to feel and spell. Colorful Words - Use two different color pens to write your spelling words. Use one color to write the consonants and the other for the vowels (a, e, i, o, u, and y if it says a long i or long e sound). Do this one more time. Close your eyes and picture the word in your mind. Now try and write the word without looking. Wordsearch - Make a word search puzzle either on graph paper or online.http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/ Memory Game - Make pairs of word cards. Flip them over and try to match the pairs! Tux 'Em - Download TuxPaint for free and type out your words several times! http://www.tuxpaint.org Scrabble - Use Scrabble tiles to spell your words. Draw your "Scrabbled" words on a piece of paper. Sing Them Loud, Sing Them Soft - Have your Mom or Dad sing the letters of a spelling word to you in a loud voice. You echo the spelling and then sing it again softly. Now BOTH of you sing the word in the voice you choose! Play-doh / Clay - Build your words with play-doh. Geo-Greeting - Go to http://www.geogreeting.com and type in your spelling words. The site will use buildings and other landmarks from around the world to spell your words in a really neat looking way. You can even email them to me when you are finished! Spreadsheet Them - Use Excel to type your words into separate cells. Then make each cell a different font, color, and size. Finally, let the computer sort them into alphabetical order!
