1)  Q My child is experiencing difficulty in a particular subject. What is the best way to help them?
A

The first step is to contact the teacher(s) to arrange for a Parent-Teacher Conference. I recommend meeting with the team of teachers because this allows you to discover if there is a pattern or if the issue is only in one subject area. The teachers can discuss with you options for strategies that they can use in the classroom and/or things you can do at home to help your child. Keep in contact with the teachers to help track your child's progress. If problems persist or something new pops up, contact the teachers again. They can best discuss your child's progress or problem areas and make any changes to strategies as necessary.

2)  Q How can I find out if my child has homework? How can I check to make sure they have no missing assignments?
A

Each teacher has his/her own website which can be accessed through the Overhills Middle School website ( http://harnett.nc.schoolwebpages.com/education/components/sectionlist/default.php?sectiondetailid=343 ). Once on the home page at the OMS website, choose "Classrooms" and select your child's grade level. This will take you to a list of the teachers for that grade. You can simply choose the teacher you need and you will be taken to their webpage. At that point, refer to the menu bar on their page to access information about homework and/or projects. There will also be a way to e-mail the teacher from their webpage (choose "Contact Form" from the menu). Another way to check on your child's progress is to access our "Parent Assistance Module" (PAM). You will have to complete an application and turn it in to the Data Manager at the school attended by your youngest child. Once you receive your Username and Temporary Password, you can log on and access the progress of your child/children. PAM can show you the assignments given in a particular class along with your child's grade. It will also indicate missing assignments. If you have a concern about the grade or missing work, please contact that teacher via e-mail or by calling the school. You may have to leave a voice mail for them if you call during instruction time.
