Absences:
If a student leaves school early, he or she
must be signed-out by a parent or guardian in the office. If
someone else is to pick up the child, the parent should notify the office in
advance and in writing.
A student
must be present at least one-half of the instructional day in order to be
recorded present for that day. If a
student leaves school before 11:30 am, he or she will be counted absent for
that day. Students must be "signed in or
out" when leaving early or arriving late.
If a
student is absent, parents should send a note explaining the absence within
three days to the homeroom teacher.
Absences will be coded excused or unexcused, depending upon the reason
for the absence. Teachers will code an
absence unexcused if a note is not received within three days.

In order
for a student's absence to be excused, the parent or guardian must
provide a written explanation of the absence within three (3) days
after the absence. There are several legal reasons allowed by N.C.
State law for absences. These are listed below:
1. Personal Illness
2. Death in the immediate family
3. Medical appointment as verified in writing by the physician or his/her designee
4. Miscellaneous causes of an emergency nature approved by the principal, a staff assistant, or a medical authority
5. Court Summons
6. Religious holiday
7. Absence that, in the judgement of the principal, has an educational
value as great as that received during an equal time in the classroom
or permitted only if a comparable opportunity will not be available at
a time other than during school hours. The principal shall determine if
the amount of time missed is of reasonable length. This absence must be
approved prior to the actual time away from school.
