What is a school reassignment?

In the Harnett County Public School System a student's attendance area and the school they are assigned to is based on the address of their parent/guardian.  A reassignment is a request to attend a school outside of their assigned attendance area.

When can I apply for a school reassignment?

Reassignment requests must be submitted by July 1 for the upcoming school year.

How long does a school reassignment last?

Reassignments are good for one school year. Requests must be resubmitted each year by July 1st.

How do I apply for a school reassignment?

Parents/Guardians interested in school reassignment for their child must submit an application.  Applications are available at the schools, the Board of Education and on the Harnett County Schools website at www.harnett.k12.nc.us.

What if my reassignment request is based on child care needs?

A Child Care Verification Form must be submitted with the application for reassignment.

What if I am an employee of Harnett County Schools and requesting reassignment for my child?

An employee of the Harnett County School System may request reassignment of their child to any Harnett County school.  If you are an employee of the school system you must submit your application for reassignment by the July 1st deadline or within two weeks of employment.

How are parents/guardians notified of the results of their application?

Parents/guardians will receive a notification letter via US mail by August 1st for the upcoming school year.

Is there an appeal process?

Yes, if the reassignment request is denied, the parent/guardian will receive a denial letter explaining how to appeal the decision.

Does Harnett County Schools accept students from other counties?

Yes, however, out of county reassignments are reviewed on a case by case basis and several factors are taken into consideration to include hardships.

How can an out of county student apply to attend a Harnett County school?

Parents/guardians of out of county students must submit an out of district application which is available on the Harnett County Schools website.  A release from the Board of Education of the county in which the student resides must accompany the application.

As an out of county applicant, does a release from the school system in which I reside automatically approve me for reassignment?

No, the release is just one step in the process.  Obtaining a release does not guarantee your application for reassignment will be approved.

If approved, does an out of county student pay tuition? 

Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year out of county students approved to attend a Harnett County school will be required to pay tuition.

What does it mean if a school I wish to apply for reassignment to is "capped"?

If a school is "capped", the school is near or at student capacity and only students who reside in that school's attendance area will be allowed to enroll there.

If I already have a child attending the requested school will my reassignment request be automatically granted?

No, a student is not automatically approved to attend a school where their sibling has been reassigned.  All students must complete the reassignment process in order to be considered.

If I move into another attendance area within the county during the school year, may I request that my children stay at their current school until the end of the school year?

Yes, students whose legal residence changes from one school assignment area to another during the same school year may choose to finish out that school year in the same school.  However, you will have to provide transportation.

If I move into the county after July 1st, may I request reassignment to a school outside of my attendance area?

Yes, the superintendent or his/her designee will consider student requests for transfer to another school during the school year based upon space availability, the needs of the child and other criteria.

My child will be entering kindergarten in the fall.  How can I request reassignment to a school outside of their attendance area?

A student entering kindergarten must be pre-registered at the school in his/her attendance area prior to requesting reassignment to another school.

If my child is approved for reassignment will it affect his/her ability to participate in athletic activities?

Any student granted a voluntary reassignment from the school serving his/her attendance area shall not participate in athletic activities that come under the jurisdiction of the NC High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) and the State Board of Education for 365 days after the first approved transfer date.

Is transportation available for reassigned students?


If a student is approved for school reassignment the parent is responsible for transportation.  For school improvement choice transfers the school system must provide transportation.


Can an approved reassignment be rescinded?


The principal of the receiving school may request that a reassignment be rescinded by the Superintendent for any of the following reasons:

-Violation of the Student Code of Conduct

-Truancy issues to include excessive absences/tardiness

-Behavioral issues

-Poor academic achievement

Please be aware that a student on a reassignment is considered a "guest" at the requested school.  It is expected that both the student and parent/guardian abide by all school policies and rules.

Any reassignment request that is approved based upon false or misleading information will be declared void, and the transfer will be rescinded.
