Ms. Karen Tutt began teaching in a first grade classroom, and through the years has taught kids through eighth grade, in a regular classroom, a language arts class or a reading class. As an avid reader, after many years she decided it was time to go from the classroom into the school library to share her love of reading. She has lived and worked in several states, and spent more than two years in the Azores, Portugal. Returning to Dunn in 1999 to care for her mother, she was the librarian at Wayne Ave. School for eleven years. After a short retirement, she came to Coats Elementary to share the library duties with Ms. Beverley Howard.   Ms. Tutt will be teaching students in grades 3-5. When she's not at school, she is a traveler, an actress, a crafter and a reader.  Ms. Tutt has one daughter, Sam, and lives in Dunn with her dog, Elmo, and cats JD, Ginger, Pie and Sallie Mae.

Ms. Beverley Howard retired in 2005 from CES where she was the Guidance Counselor. Before becoming a school Counselor she taught grades 1-4. She LOVES to read and is so excited to be coming back to CES to serve as the media coordinator along side Ms. Tutt! Ms. Howard  will be teaching students in kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade.

The media center at Coats Elementary School operates on an alternating fixed/flexible schedule. Media/Information skills are taught in scheduled classes every other week for kindergarten through fifth grade. Skills include searching for books by title, author, keyword, etc. on Destiny's Online Media Collection; knowing the different areas of the media center; author and illustrator studies; vocabulary of information skills; etc.

All teachers are encouraged to plan collaboratively with the media coordinators for individual and group research or media lessons. Through collaboration, it will be possible to integrate information skills with objectives being taught in the classrooms.
