Standards have changed for all grade levels in the state of North Carolina. In Harnett County, we will be using the Common Core State Standards and Essential Standards. Harnett County Schools wants every student to be college and career ready by the time he/she graduates from high school. Beginning this year, the curriculum (what we want students to know and be able to do) is changing in every elementary school classroom. The NC Standard Course of Study is being replaced with new standards (Common Core State Standards or Essential Standards). As in real life, these standards ask students to use their literacy (reading and writing) skills and math skills throughout their school day. The standards are also more rigorous -asking our students to become problem-solvers and independent thinkers in order to be better prepared for their future.
