Students from Harnett Primary School competed on Saturday, March 21, at the Johnston County Regionals of the North Carolina Science Olympiad. At this all day event, the Harnett Primary students competed in four events against eight other teams. These events included: 3,2,1 Blast Off, where the team built rockets out of various materials and launched them. Pasta Tower, where the team built a tower out of pasta and glue to hold up to 23 pounds of sand.
Describe It, Build It, where a team of two competed where one wrote directions for the other to build an abstract object and lastly, Fast Facts, where a team of four relay raced with academic and physical activities.
The HPS team place 3rd in 3,2,1 Blast Off, 5th for Describe It, Build It, 6th for Pasta Tower and 8th in Fast Facts.
Although this was Harnett Primary School's second year competing in this event, this was the first year that many of these students participated.
The students were coached by Mrs. Terry Moore, Mrs. Laronda Abney and Mrs. Renee Brinson. Mr. Craig Moore, Mr. Joe Caro, Ms. Vanessa Stultz and Campbell University students – Makenzie Benton, Amber Puffenbarger and Thomas Rardin - were volunteers.
