Welcome to Harnett County Schools' Exceptional Children's Department

  • We provide special education and related services as designated by the federal mandates of the Individual with Disabilities Act and the regulations of the North Carolina Public School Law, Article 9.

    If you are new to Harnett County and have a child who has been receiving special education services, you will need to register your child at the school within your home attendance zone.  You will also need to complete the following steps:

    • Complete an enrollment packet and ensure that you check "Yes" if your child has an IEP
    • Complete necessary transportation form
    • Share a copy of your child's most recent IEP
    • Sign a "Release of Information" form for access to your child's educational records

Meet our Educator of Excellence

  • April Hood

    The Harnett County School System is proud to select Mrs. April Hood as the Educator of Excellence!  Mrs. Hood has served as an educator in Harnett County for eighteen years.  She has provided education to students at Coats Elementary School for the past ten years.  Her teaching experience spans primary and elementary grade levels and includes both regular education and special education.  Mrs. Hood has been an Exceptional Children’s teacher the past four years in the resource and separate settings.  

    Her colleagues say:

    • “LOVE, LOVE, LOVE April Hood! She is a fantastic educator! She is also one of our NCSIP data collectors for Math and does an amazing job with fidelity! Last year she was amazing as the lead teacher at her site as she took on the role of others to support students across settings when they were down an educator. She's a great team member for sure!
    • “When I think of the definition of teacher of excellence, I think of April Hood. She is an educator who does what is best for the students to be successful academically and socially. She goes beyond what is required to make sure that she meets the needs of her fellow staff members and students. She assists new staff by explaining interventions for students who may be at-risk. She is willing take on numerous roles to meet the needs of the students.”

    Her administrators say:

    • April Hood is an efficient, detail-oriented, and extremely competent Exceptional Children’s Lead Teacher.  She organizes the EC teacher’s schedules and IEP meetings, all while teaching classes all day.  She is an exemplary leader in other areas of our school also by heading up our School Improvement Team and assisting with the yearbook publication.  She has an excellent rapport with students, staff and parents in all of her roles as our Exceptional Children’s Lead Teacher at Coats Elementary School.
    • April is a go-getter who goes above and beyond for her students and their learning.

    As a resource teacher, Mrs. Hood works with students directly as she provides services to them in academic areas of need.  Mrs. Hood has a true gift for utilizing the resources available to her to meet the needs of students.  Through the use of research-based programs and interventions, coupled with her own use of strategies and practices aligned with students interests, she has created a combination of success for students.  Data supports the growth of students in academic areas as they work with Mrs. Hood to address skill deficits.

    Mrs. Hood’s interaction and positive rapport with students, parents, and colleagues is commendable and should serve as a model for other teachers of Exceptional Children in our district.  She is a wonderful addition to Harnett County Schools and we are proud to honor her with this distinction for our district.
