    Major Concepts/Contents.  The LET 3 and 4 courses are only for cadets who have successfully completed LET 1 and 2 courses and are fully committed to utilizing the JROTC Program to enhance their citizenship and leadership skills.  These courses are designed to enable the cadet to apply/demonstrate their leadership, instructional and counseling abilities and work ethic.

     

    The LET 3 course builds on what was learned in LET 1 and 2 courses.  Instruction and learning will include, but not limited to the following JROTC Student Core Text subjects: Citizenship in Action (Unit 1), Leadership Theory and Application (Unit 2), Foundation for Success (Unit 3), and Service Learning (Unit 8).  Cadet at this level are instructed and evaluated on the practical application of assigned leadership position.

     

    The LET 4 course builds on the LET 3 course and will include, but not limited to the following JROTC Student Core Text subjects: Service to the Nation, Application of Leadership Principles, Teaching Skills, Fitness Training, and Service Learning Planning, Execution and Reflection.  Cadets at this level are also instructed and evaluated on the practical application of command and staff procedures/leadership responsibilities.

     

    Rules for entry into LET 3 and 4 Courses:  All Cadets in LET 3 and 4 courses agree to continue to adhere to the policy for conduct, wear and maintenance of the JROTC uniform as specified in the LET 1-2 Course Syllabus.  As a reminder, the JROTC Uniform must be worn when scheduled and to the standard as outlined in Cadet Command Regulation 145-2 and Army Regulation 670-1.   Another reminder for LET 3 and 4 Course Cadets is that they agree to take instructions from cadets who may by position or rank be in charge of them for performance assessment.

     

    Textbook:  Most instructions will be based upon the JROTC Student Core Texts for LET 3-4.  The Student Core Text will remain in the JROTC classroom.  However, cadets may coordinate to take a Student Core Text home for further study as required.  Each cadet will be provided with a Cadet Desk Reference Guide that provides a summary of key information from the Student Core Texts.  The cadet is expected to bring the reference guide to class daily and to turn it in at the end of semester.

     

    Materials: Lose leaf paper for notes.  A spiral composition pad for journal assignments.  A pen, pencil, and highlighter.  For portfolio, a black one inch three ring notebook binder that has clear front, back and spine panels for inserts.  The binder must accommodate 8-1/2 x 11” sheets.  Index dividers for the binder (Index Sheet Set Loose Leaf Binder with letters A-Z).  These materials must be brought to class daily.  Note the portfolio will be maintained in JROTC the majority of the time.  Cadets who already have a notebook portfolio on file do not need to purchase another notebook.

     

    Grading and Assessments:

     

    Scale: A=90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, D=60-69, and F=59 and below.

     

    Learning Activities 30%Includes participation, team application activities, map studies, current events, class work, vocabulary, and guided reading.

    Independent Practice 30%Includes merits/demerits (more details below), exams/tests/quizzes, rubric evaluated assignment (i.e. essays), performance oriented tasks and journaling.  Exams/tests/quizzes will be conducted throughout each marking period.  Exams and quizzes will cover material presented during the class to include training activities such as drill and fitness that occur outside of the classroom.  The exam/test/quiz will constitute 5% of independent practice.  All cadets are required to maintain an organized journal chronicling their JROTC assignments/activities.  The journal will represent 10% of independent practice.  Rubric evaluated assignments and performance oriented tasks shall make up the remainder of independent practice.

     

    Unit Assessment 40%:

    Includes Cadet Challenge (fitness test), leadership lab, service learning projects, portfolio maintenance, and participation in battalion activities.

     

    Cadet Challenge/Physical Conditioning Training (PT) 10% of unit assessment:

    Fitness activities will be conducted every Friday or on the final day of classes for any given week.  Cadets are required to purchase and wear the JROTC P.T. Uniform.  Total cost is $15.00 - $20.00 depending on size.  PT will consist of exercises and activities that target aerobic capacity (run/walk, constant movement, etc.), abdominal strength, flexibility, upper body strength, and team building.  The objectives are to assist cadets in establishing lifelong habits of regular physical activity, reinforce importance of team works, enhance morale and esprit, and prepare the cadet to excel on the Cadet Challenge Test.  All cadets are required to participate in Cadet Challenge unless medically excused.  The JROTC staff will establish minimum standards for each fitness activity.  Failure to achieve those standards will result in a grade of zero for that day.

     

    Leadership Lab/Projects/Battalion Activities 20% of unit assessment:

    Covers performance as a JROTC cadet in uniform to include inspections and performance as a leader/follower.  Per program requirements, each student is required to wear his/her issued uniform at least once every week or for special events.  The uniform is normally worn on Tuesday of each week.  It is the responsibility of the cadet to check the unit information board for changes in the prescribed uniform and the schedule for wear.  Failure to wear the uniform when prescribed will result in a grade of zero (0) for the uniform grade for that week.  If a cadet fails to wear his/her uniform on Tuesday, but wears it on Wednesday (only on Wednesday) of the same week, he/she will receive a grade of 80 for that week.  Cadets must wear their uniform properly at all times to include before and after school hours (exceptions for when engaged in other class work, such as PE, masonry, carpentry, etc.) to receive credit for that week.  If the instructors discover that on a uniform day a cadet changed into or from civilian clothes during the school day without an approved exception, the cadet will receive a zero for the weekly uniform grade.  Proper conduct/performance of drill and ceremony (in uniform or out of uniform as part of the class) and uniform inspections are part of the uniform grade.  Students at the LET 3-4 must actively set the example in drill each week and be prepared to lead, instruct and evaluate drill on weekly bases.

     

    Portfolio Maintenance 10% of unit assessment: each cadet is required to maintain a portfolio in accordance with Cadet Command guidance.  Requirements will be provided to the cadet in class.  LET 3-4 Cadets maintain their portfolio in such a manner as to set the example for LET 1-2 Cadets.

     

    Make up workIt is the cadet responsibility to find out all assignments missed.  Test and other classroom exercises must be made up in accordance with the HCHS Student Handbook (for excused absences).  Failure to comply with those guidelines will result in a zero (0) for a test/class exercise grade.  It is the student responsibility to arrange for a make-up test time or to complete make-up class exercise material.  The make-up testing and/or exercise completion will be done outside of class time.

    Merits/DemeritsEach marking period cadets will start with 100 merits points.  Cadets may earn positive points (merits) that add to their total for exceptional good performance, completions of assigned staff and leadership duties, volunteering after school hours in JROTC, and participation in JROTC activities during and after school hours.  Demerits are points that subtract from the grade.  The following actions, for example, will result in a deduction of points per infraction and are in addition to any necessary action required by school policy: tardy to class, failure to bring required materials to class, failure to participate in group or individual class exercises, sleeping in class, disruptive behavior, insubordination to cadet leaders, JROTC Instructors or school staff/officials and violation of dress code (when not in uniform).  This is not an all-inclusive list and more detail can be found in the cadet merit/demerit handout.  The final merit/demerit points will be combined and averaged with other requirements listed under independent practice (above).

    Tardy policy:  Cadets who are tardy will be managed in accordance with the HCHS Tardy Policy in the HCHS Student Hand Book.

     

    Attendance policyAny cadets who miss more than 7 days will automatically receive a failing grade.  A grade of FF will be assigned to a student who is passing and fails as a result of excessive absences.

     

    Classroom rules:

    1. Report to class on time and follow instructions and commands the first time given by instructors or cadet leaders.
    2. Check unit bulletin board and training schedules prior to start of class
    3. Respect cadet peers, cadet leaders and instructors
    4. Respect the cadet battalion facility rules and equipment
    5. Use the rest room prior to coming to class
    6. Follow established cadet battalion procedures for asking or answering questions.
    7. Profanity will not be tolerated
    8. Do not sleep in class at any time
    9. No drinking, eating, or chewing gum allowed during JROTC training or in JROTC facilities.
    10. Adhere to all cadet handbook/handout, school and county rules, procedures and policies.

    Other Major Events that promote the growth and development of the Cadet are the Military Ball and JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) which occur in the second semester.

    Note on Uniform Issue:  Each cadet will be issued a uniform normally within the first two weeks of the semester at no cost to the cadet.  The uniform will consist of beret, grey shirt, necktie/necktab, blue slacks, belt, shoes, blue dress jacket, and black utility jacket with JROTC Patch.  The total value of the uniform along with accessories is approximately $750.00.  Cadets are liable for any and all uniform items that are lost, destroyed, or rendered unserviceable not due to fair wear and tear.  Most LET 3-4s should already have their uniform.  If a uniform item in their possession needs to be exchanged, then they must bring that item in first during the designated time period for uniform issue in order to receive a replacement item.  Reminder, the maintenance and upkeep of the uniform is the responsibility of the cadet/parent/guardian once issued.

     

    Special note regarding Cadet Officers:  The Cadet officer Corps is made up of Cadets from the LET 3-4 Level.  Officers are expected to set the example for all members of the Cadet Corps.  LET 3-4s who are officers or that are promoted to officers are reminded that school disciplinary action that results in out of school suspension or in school suspension will result in their being reverted back to the enlisted level, and he/she may be removed from their staff or command position.  The Cadet may be able to remain as a member of the officer corps or retain their staff/command position upon appeal to and approval from the JROTC instructor team.
