    Good Afternoon,


    I want to let you know a few things. First, federal forms were distributed today. We filled in section A in class today. Please complete sections B and C and sign the bottom. I would love to have all of these returned by the end of the week, although they will still be accepted after that. Our kids will earn extra recess if everyone returns the form, and the first class in the school to return 100% of their forms will win a pizza party! Please ask your child about these forms and send them back to school, completed, as soon as possible.


    Secondly, we will be running the Ninja Warrior Challenge course tomorrow at 10:45, so tomorrow will be the last day to return the signed waivers. If you have raised money, please send that, too. Even if you don't have the $3, your child can still participate if you sign and return the waiver.

    The third thing I would like to mention is that all of 4th and 5th grade will be taking a new type of state assessment on Monday, October 14. The test will begin after we return from specials. It is a reading test and should last about 90 minutes. This test was originally scheduled to be on the computers, but we are now taking them using pencils and paper. The results of these tests will be used to help guide instruction. One will be given each marking period.

    The last item I want to share is that the end of the marking period is quickly approaching. October 29 will be the end of the marking period and late work will no longer be accepted after that point. Please encourage your child to complete any missing work which he/she may have. We have a missing work board in the classroom, and students have also been shown how to view grades online, so they should always have a way to determine which assignments are missing.

    Good Afternoon,

          I hope that this newsletter finds you happy and healthy!  I wanted to send out a message to let you know about a few things happening in our class.

    • This year we have nut allergies in our classroom.  If you bring any birthday treats to class during the year, please ensure that they are nut free.  This included peanuts and tree nuts. Your child is still welcome to bring items with nuts for their own consumption, though.
    • This year we will be having several opportunities for parents to volunteer, including field trips.  In order to participate in these, all parents must have a background check on file through Harnett County Schools.  The background checks take no more than a couple of minutes to fill out and usually come back within a few days, sometimes even sooner.  It is important to note that you will NOT be allowed to attend a field trip without a background check on file. Please visit www.harnettvolunteers.com to fill out your form.
    • Picture day will be September 20. More information will be sent home soon.
    • Order forms for yearbooks will be distributed tomorrow.  The cost is $20 and you must place your order online. The website is www.strawbridge.net and the online code is YB107170.
    • Homework started being distributed last week.  Students receive it on Monday and turn it in on Friday.  In addition to the paper, students need to read 20-30 minutes each night.
    • Next week we will begin our health contracts for the year.  Health contracts are papers which tell students the 6 health projects they must complete each marking period.  Students are welcome to work on the assignments in class if they finish work early, or have extra time, but time will not be provided especially for them.  Beginning next Friday, September 20, one project will be due each Friday. Students may use health books or other resources for their information.

    2018-2019 Newsletters

    Happy April Parents,

         I hope that this soggy start to April is working out for you.  In class, kids are working hard on academics and also working hard to contain their excitement about the upcoming spring break.  I have a few reminders, a few requests and a few new things.

     

    First, the reminders:

    • Field trip permission slips were distributed last week.  I have received them back from about 75% of the class. If you have not yet returned your child's permission slip, please do so as soon as you can.  If your child would like to purchase a bagged lunch from the school, I need the permission slip back this week. If they are bringing lunch from home, you can wait until after break.  So far only 1 parent has expressed an interest in chaperoning. If you would like to chaperone as well, let me know. The more the merrier!
    • I would like to wrap the rubber bands around the shirts for tie dye before we leave for break, and will need to purchase the t-shirts this weekend.  For this reason, I need either a plain white cotton t-shirt and 50 cents or $2.50 cents by Friday of this week from each student. Thank you to those who have already sent theirs in!

    Now the requests:

     

    • Students use dry erase markers every day in class.  They are essential tools for learning in our class. Several students have either lost their markers or have markers which have dried out.  Please check with your child and replenish markers if necessary.
    • Our supply of pencils is running low.  If you happen to be able to send in some pencils to get us through to June, it would be very much appreciated.

    Finally, the new information:

     

    • Our school had an author come visit us yesterday and he was selling autographed copies of his books.  Many students in the school forgot to bring money, since his visit had a long weekend preceding it. As a result, the author has agreed to come back tomorrow morning to sell his books in the front lobby.  The books are $8 for one or $15 for two. If your child wishes to purchase an autographed copy of a book, please send money tomorrow morning.
    • HES will be having a spirit week next week to celebrate April being the month of the military child.  Here are the spirit week themes: Monday-Wear Camo, Tuesday-Wear Stars or Shiny Sparkles, Wednesday-Wear Your Favorite Superhero Look, Thursday-Wear Red, White and Blue, Friday-Wear Purple.
    • Lastly, the health contract for the 4th quarter was distributed yesterday.  The first project is due on Friday of this week and one will be due each Friday until they are all complete.  The final due date for all 6 projects is May 17. Children are allowed to work on these in class if they have extra time, but time for it is not explicitly provided.  Your child will probably need to work on them at home. Many of the projects have multiple parts, so make sure that your child reads the directions carefully, and does research in order to learn about the material in each project.  I have attached a copy of the paper which details the requirements of each project.
    • Report cards will be distributed on April 4th.  Please keep the report card and then sign and return the envelope the next day.

    Good Morning,

         I want to give you a heads up about a few events happening here.  Papers about two of these events are being distributed to students today.  
    • First, HES has an author by the name of Michael Finklea coming to speak to us on Monday.  Signed copies of his books will be available for purchase on Monday only.  The papers being distributed today have brief descriptions of the books available for purchase and their prices.  Purchasing a book is not required, but I wanted to make sure that you knew that the option was available.
    • Second, our field trip permission slips are being sent home today.  Please return the permission slip as soon as possible.  The $4 fee can be turned in at a later date if you desire, but we need to submit lunch count numbers to the cafeteria far in advance, so I need the permission slips back soon.  You are welcome to send the money now, as well, if you would like.
    • Our spring/class pictures will be held on April 10.  Papers will be coming home at a later date with details about purchasing class pictures.
    • If you have not yet sent in $2.50 for a t-shirt, please do so by the end of next week, so that we can prepare our t-shirts to be tie-dyed before we leave for spring break.  Papers were distributed to students a couple of weeks ago and an email was sent last week with details about this.

    Good Morning,

          I hope that this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the first (chilly) day of spring.  I have a few updates to share with you today.

    • The end of the 3rd marking period is next Thursday, which is an early release day.  Any missing work or redoes must be turned in before students leave on the 28th, as I have to submit grades on the 29th.  Students have access to their online grades and missing work, and can show you this from home if you don't have access to the Powerschool Parent Portal and wish to see your child's academic progress.
    • Our school's spring fling festival will take place on April 6th.  The PTO is looking for volunteers and vendors for the event. If you would like to do either, please contact the PTO.  More information about the event will go home with students as the date approaches.
    • The 4th grade will be taking a field trip to Raleigh on Friday, April 26th.  The cost will be $4 per student. Permission slips will be going home within the next week.  If you would like to chaperone, please make sure that you have completed a background check through the school.  It can take up to 2 weeks to come back, so please go to www.harnettvolunteers.com and fill out the information soon if you hope to chaperone.
    • In preparation for the trip, our class will be tie-dying t-shirts in a class color.  On the day of the trip it is easier to locate our students quickly if they are all dressed in the same thing.  In order to do this, please send in $2.50 with your child. This will allow me to purchase packages of t-shirts and dye in the color the class chooses.  Alternately, you may bring in a new white cotton t-shirt and 50 cents to cover the cost of dye. Please have these turned in by the end of March.
    • Lastly, HES is having a spirit night at HWY 55 on March 26th.  A portion of the profits go to our school. If you plan to dine out that night, please consider doing so at HWY 55.

    Good Afternoon and Happy Friday!

          I hope that you have had a terrific week and had the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful weather.  I have a few pieces of information to share with you.  
     
    • Our school is having a box top collection competition for all grade levels.  The grade level with the most box tops turned in will earn an ice cream party from Sunni Skies Ice Cream.  Please send in all of your saved box tops so that 4th grade can win the sweet treats!
    • Papers were distributed today about our school's Read-A-Thon. It goes from now until March 8th.  There are prizes for each level of reading and fund-raising.  More information can be found on the paper which students received today.  Each student who logs at least 500 minutes of reading between now and the end of the read-a-thon will have a root beer or orange soda float in class, in addition to the rewards listed on the paper.  Please encourage your child to read read read!
    • If you have not returned the pictures envelops or money for the pictures which were recently sent home, please do so ASAP.  Thanks to those who have already turned returned them!
    • Our geometry standards in 4th grade are very heavy on vocabulary, so although have not yet started our vocabulary unit, we have started introducing 2-3 geometry vocabulary words per week.  My hope is that this will make the geometry unit easier for children when it does arrive.  So far, we have discussed line, line segment, point, vertex and ray.  I will occasionally update you on which new words have been introduced.  It would be excellent if you could discuss them with your child.
    • The due dates for the Tarheel project are fast approaching.  The trading cards are due next Friday, February 15th.  The timelines are due the following Tuesday, and the presentations are staggered on the 20th-22nd.  We will continue working on these next week in class, but kids will probably need to finish them at home.  
    • Our classroom awards will take place on March 1st.  On Monday I plan to email the parents of children who will receive awards.  I will not be sending this email to parents whose children are not receiving awards.  I will also include the time of the awards in this email.

    Good Afternoon,
     
    I have a few more updates to pass along to you.  
     
    First, as you were notified last night, there was an error with powerschool which resulted in grading errors in Harnett County as well as several other counties in the state.  Due to this error, teachers have been asked to not enter any more grades into powerschool until the issue is resolved.  This means that if you are signed up for the powerschool parent portal, it will show no changes until we are cleared to enter grades again.  We are still doing work and work is still being graded, but those grades just can't be entered yet.

    Secondly, students in our class chose Tarheels, today, to research for our research project. This is a very involved project which we will spend close to 3 weeks working in in class.  There are 3 main parts to the project. 
     
    1.  For the first part, students will need to make a timeline about the Tarheel chosen.  The timeline should have 6-8 items on it and each item should have both a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) and a picture or graphic to accompany it.  
     
    2.  The students will also need to make a trading card of their Tarheel.  This should be similar to a baseball card, except that it should be the size of a piece of printer paper, with the person's picture, name and birth/death dates on the front and a bulleted list of important information about the person on the back.  The trading card needs to have a border which has something representing the Tarheel, as well.  For example, a card with a baseball player, might have baseballs and bats drawn as a border.  
     
    3.  The last component of the project is an oral presentation in which each student will dress as their chosen Tarheel, carry 1 or more props which represent that Tarheel and speak for 1-2 minutes to the class, as if they were the Tarheel researched.  Please use items which you already have at home to create your tarheel costume and prop.  Grades will be given on effort and preparation, not on the elaborateness of the costume.  
     
    If you need help getting anything for any part of the project, please let me know soon and I will try to help get the items.  We will be doing much of the research in school, but some work will also need to be done at home.  The trading card is due on February 15.  The timeline is due on February 19 and students chose their presentation dates in class today.  These days are February 20-22.  Your child should be able to tell you which one he or she selected.  Please let me know if you have any questions.
     
    Lastly, the 3rd quarter health contracts will be distributed on Monday.  The first project will be due on Friday, and one will be due each Friday until they are finished.  As usual, it doesn't matter in what order they are completed, as long as they are all done by the final due date of March 8.  I have attached a copy of the health contract for you.

    Good Morning,

           I hope that your holiday season was a wonderful one and that you enjoyed spending some extra time with your children.  I know that I enjoyed spending some time being a mommy to my own kids!  I am excited to be back teaching, now, though.  As we move into a new year, I have some  information I would like to share with you.
     
    • The school science fair is on Wednesday, January 16th.  If your child has been doing a project, please bring it to school on Monday, January 14th, so that it can be set up for display and judged.
    • We will be having our classroom spelling bee on January 24th and 25th.  The winner will advance to the school spelling bee on February 1st.
    • The final due date for health projects for this marking period is next Friday, January 11th.
    • The end of the marking period is fast approaching.  Please encourage your child to turn in any missing work as soon as possible.
    • There is no school on January 21-23 for MLK day and teacher workdays.
    • In math we are beginning our voyage into the land of fractions, where we will remain for much of the 3rd marking period.  Fractions account for roughly 1/3 of the questions on the math EOG, so it is really important to become confident in them.  This is much easier to do with a firm grasp on single digit multiplication facts.  If your child is still not solid on these, please take time to practice them each day.
    • It is the time of year when students are starting to run low on some supplies.  The biggest item we struggle to have enough of is dry erase markers.  We use them daily in math, and several students are without them.  I am down to one box, which I will need to do instruction on the board between now and the end of the year.  Please check with your child and replenish as necessary.
    • We are starting to take mid-year assessments in class, and so far, they are showing that most kids are making good growth.  The best way to keep the growth moving forward in reading, is by doing lots and lots of reading.  Please make sure that your children are reading 20-30 minutes at home EVERY night.  The more they do, the more they will grow.
    • We are approaching time of year when the weather can get fairly cold, but we still go outside unless it is precipitating.  Please make sure to send warm outerwear on cold days.

    Good Morning,

        I hope that you are having a terrific Tuesday and that your Thanksgiving will be full of thankful thoughts and delicious food.  Among other things, I am thankful that I get to work with your children each day. They are a phenomenal group of young people! I have several updates to share with you today.

     

    • First, as I am sure your children happily shared yesterday, we don't have homework this week.  You may choose to do a health project for this week or not. I am happy with either choice. Please continue to read nightly, even though no other homework is due.  
    • On December 11 we will be taking a field trip to see 'A Christmas Carol' at Western Harnett High School.  Permission slips were distributed about a week and a half ago, but several people haven't returned theirs.  The cost will be $4 per person and money will be collected next week. If you haven't returned the permission slips yet, please do so as soon as you can.
    • Also on December 11, our class will be going to the holiday shop put on by the PTO.  More information will be going home within the next couple of weeks.
    • If you plan to order books from Scholastic, please do so before we leave for Thanksgiving break.  This will allow time for them to ship before the winter break.
    • Highland's science fair will take place on January 16th.  I will be giving kids more information about it in the next couple of days.  The science fair is optional this year. I rarely give extra credit, but will give extra credit for participation in the science fair.  If students choose to participate, they must do experiments using the scientific method. Demonstrations or models will not be accepted.  If you choose to participate in the science fair, it would be a good idea to start thinking of idea now, since some experiments take time to complete.
    • Tomorrow is Career Day at HES.  Students are encouraged to dress up in the clothing they would wear if they had the job they want to have as adults.  As always, no weapons are allowed.
    • Lastly, our class goes outside each day for recess unless it is precipitating.  This is true even on cold days. Please make sure that your child dresses according to the weather.  We go our at a little after 1pm each day, so it is usually near the daily high temperature. If you need assistance getting winter clothing, please let me know and I will do what I can to help.

    Hello and happy Friday!  I have a few notes to share with you about the goings on here in our classroom.

    • Highland will, once again, be having our book character parade on Wednesday of next week. At 10:00am students who are dressed as a character from a book will walk through the halls of our school showing their costumes to spectators.  Students are encouraged to bring the book the character is from, but this is not required. The school dress code still applies. No weapons, masks or scary costumes are permitted.
    • Our kids who raised at least $100 for the Ninja Warrior Challenge will have their demonstration and ice cream party on Tuesday afternoon.  Our Ninja Warrior Challenge was a huge success and raised close to $20,000! Thanks to everyone who participated.
    • The last day for the 1st marking period is next Friday, November 2nd.  All missing work which must be turned in no later than this. Anything still missing after the 2nd will become a permanent zero in the grade book.  Your child has logged into the student portal of powerschool more than once and should know how to do it. They can see what assignments are missing from here.  If you would like to apply for parent access, you can download the papers from this link https://www.harnett.k12.nc.us/Page/10400 and return them to the school office.  You have to do this in person and show your identification at that time. I do have some copies printed out already. If you would like me to send one home with your child, please let me know and I will do so.  
    • If you have not already contacted me to schedule a conference, please do so as soon as possible.  I am generally available from 8:45-9:15am or from 3:40-4:15pm. There are some exceptions to this.  If you absolutely can't make either of these times, let me know and we will see what we can do to find something which will work for both of us.
    • If you haven't turned in your Federally Connected Survey yet, please do so ASAP.  These were distributed on Monday. Returning these surveys provides HES with much needed funding.  Last year the returned surveys resulted in our school getting almost $100,000.

    Good Afternoon,

         We had a wonderful trip to the symphony today, and then spent some time talking about the perseverance that the musicians must have to make it as far as they have.  We related it to students' lives and talked about how they must have perseverance as well, to meet their academic and life goals.  We talked about the importance of picking yourself up and trying again when things go wrong.  It would be great if you could discuss this at home, as well.  
         Student information sheets were distributed last week and the majority of the class still needs to return them.  If you would please verify the information on the form is correct, correct any information which is not correct and then sign and return it as soon as possible, that would be excellent. 
          Ninja Warrior Challenge envelopes were distributed last week as well.  The prize information is listed on the back of the envelope, but the really important part is the waiver of participation on the front of the envelope.  It costs a minimum of 1 dollar to participate (more is excellent!), but the money makes no difference if the permission slip on the front isn't signed. We would like to have all of the envelopes collected by Friday.
          The book fair is this week.  Our class visited on Tuesday, but if students forgot money on that day, they may bring money tomorrow and visit during our recess time.  The book fair closes at 1pm on Friday, so it is possible to go on Friday, but tomorrow is much preferred.
          Tomorrow evening at 5:30 we have curriculum night at HES.  The teachers of each grade level will be telling parents about the standards which will be covered in their grade.  Fourth grade will be set up in the multi-purpose room.  Also, the book fair will be available starting at 5pm in the media center.
          Grades are now being entered in the computer regularly.  If you have not signed up for PowerSchool parent access yet, I would strongly encourage it.  This is a program which allows you to see individual assignment grades as well as overall grades as soon as they are entered in the computer by me.  It allows you to stay on top of missing work and low grades.  More information about how to gain access can be found here. https://www.harnett.k12.nc.us/domain/4058

    Good Afternoon,

          I hope that you came through the hurricane without significant damage.  It was great to be back in the classroom with kids today.  Although I enjoyed the chance to spend time with my own children, sleep in a little and relax a bit over the break, I can honestly say that I missed working with YOUR children while we were out.  I have several updates to share with you. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have.  During the week, I usually respond to emails within 24 hours, and I usually respond to emails received over the weekend on Mondays.
    • The first item I would like to share with you is the date of our upcoming book fair.  The book fair will be at HES all next week, but our class will be attending on Tuesday morning.  If you would like your child to have the chance to choose his/her own books, please send money on Tuesday.  Papers about the book fair were distributed today.
    • The vision screening which was originally scheduled for last Monday and Tuesday will be rescheduled for October 25th and 26th.  If you already opted out of the test, you do NOT need to do so again.  
    • The Friendly Dental Van will be coming to HES to clean teeth again soon.  The enrollment paper will be distributed tomorrow.  The paper says that it must be returned by September 10th, but the new date is October 1st.  If you would like to have your child's teeth cleaned here at school, please fill out the form tomorrow and return it no later than next Monday.
    • Our curriculum night, which was originally scheduled for last Thursday will now take place next Thursday, October 4th at 5:30pm.  The 4th grade teachers will do a presentation about the standards taught in 4th grade.  It should last under an hour.
    • Our field trip to the symphony will take place next Wednesday.  Students should dress up for this event if they are able.  A trip to the symphony is a fancy affair, after all!  More information will be send home on Wednesday of this week, but I wanted to give you a heads up that our buses will be leaving for this trip at 8:15am.  Students should plan to eat breakfast at home that day, as there will not be time to do so at school before the buses leave the lot.  I have not yet been given information about specific times for arrival at school, but I will get that information to you once I am given it.  
    • As a result of the damages done by Florence, our county is offering free breakfast and lunch to all students through the end of October.  This does not include extras such as chips and ice cream, but does include the standard meals served at school.
    • Our PTO thrift store is always looking for people who would like to donate time.  I have gone in and worked before and it really is fun.  The hours that you work translate to money for HES.  The profits from sales at the store are divided among the schools in the area based upon the number of volunteer hours from each school.  Each hour that you work, means more money for the students at Highland.
    • Tomorrow night, Tuesday, September 25, HES is having a spirit night at the HWY 55 restaurant in Cameron.  If you dine there between 4:00pm and 8:00pm and mention the fundraiser, HES will get a share of the profits.

    Hello and welcome to another great week of school in 4th grade!  I hope that you had a safe and fun long weekend. I have a few items I would like to share with you.

    1. I realized after the supply lists were sent home that I omitted headphones from the list.  We use computers regularly, and students will need headphones.  If you could send in a pair with your child, along with a container to store them in ( a zippy bag or a small plastic container labeled with your child's name will be fine) that would be great.  I will try to make it to the dollar store in the next week, as well.  I will buy several pair, which your child can purchase for $1 if you are unable to get to the store to purchase your own.
    2. The technology permission forms were distributed and discussed in great detail on Friday.  About half of the students returned them today, and I really appreciate that.  If those who have not returned them would please do so as soon as possible, that would be fabulous.  We have many activities which utilize technology, and these forms must be returned before we can use the technology.
    3. Homework will start next week.  It is a single piece of paper which is distributed on Mondays and should be returned on Fridays.  It will have both a front and a back, so make sure that you look at both.  In addition, students are expected to read 30 minutes daily at home.  We do not do a reading log, but use the honor system.  Reading independently is vital to being a successful student, so please encourage your child to read each night.
    4. Health contracts will be distributed to students within the next week.  I will send more details, as well as an electronic copy of the contract, within the next week.  Basically, though, these are short projects which address our health standards for the quarter.  One is due each Friday beginning next week.  They can be done at school, after other school work is done, or they can be done at home.

    Dear parents,

    As the end of a wonderful school year is quickly approaching, I am writing to ask for support in several areas. As you are well aware, the End of Grade Test is approaching (May 30th & May 31st ). The students have worked hard and I believe that they will shine on these tests. It is important that they see this test as an opportunity to show off what they have learned.

    Please remind your child to show all of their work in their test booklet to increase their success with the End of Grade Test. Some students are still not displaying their work accurately unless prompted to do so and teachers CANNOT prompt during the End of Grade Test.

    Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest on the nights prior to testing. Make sure that the morning routines are uneventful and that your child has plenty of time to get ready for school each day. Rushing them out of the door and off to school usually starts the day off on the wrong foot. Please do all that you can to ensure peaceful mornings for your child.

    On the mornings of testing I would like to offer a nutritional breakfast/snack for the students. I would like to serve things like: juice, sliced fruit, granola bars, trail mix and mini bagels. Please let me know as soon as possible which of these items you could send in and I can schedule you for one of the testing days. Remember that we have 28 students in all.

    We are also in need of yellow highlighters and number 2 pencils. Your donations are appreciated by each and every one of us. Thank you again for the support this year.

    Good Afternoon,

    There are many things I need to update you on.  First, thank you to everyone who participated in making the field a success.  Our students who attended had a lot of fun and learned a lot of things.  It was a long day for everyone, but it was well worth it.  Now, on to the new stuff!

     
    • Our class will be going to the book fair tomorrow morning.  This is our buy 1 get 1 free book fair.  If your child wants to buy books, please send in money tomorrow.
    • If you would like to order books online through Scholastic, go to www.scholastic.com.  Our class code is GYTBT.  I will be placing an order on Friday, so if you decide to make a purchase, please do so before then.
    • If you are able to proctor for EOG's at our school, we would greatly appreciate it.  We need people on May 30 and 31st, all day.
    • As students get more excited about the end of the school year, focus on academics becomes more of a challenge for them.  Much instructional time is being wasted each day, trying to refocus students who are talking or playing with friends during class.  If you could stress the importance of good behavior, it would be much appreciated.  
    • Unless it is breakfast time, and kids have juice or milk from the cafeteria, only water is permitted in class.  When other drinks spill, it causes sticky messes which are difficult to clean up without a water source in class.  The students have been told this multiple times, and still come to class with drinks other than water.  Unless you are packing it for lunch, please don't send beverages other than water to class.  
    • Progress reports are due to go home tomorrow, but due to numerous factors, they won't be going home until Wednesday or Thursday.  With all of the field trip planning, I haven't updated grades online recently, and want to do so before sending home progress reports so that they are as accurate as possible.  I will email you on the day I send them home, so that you know to expect them.  
    • We are getting low on soap again.  We only have 22 1/2 days of school left, so just a little bit more should get us through.  If you are able to send in anymore soap, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Good Afternoon,

           I hope that you had a wonderful spring break.  It is hard to believe that we are now 75% of the way through this school year and have only 7 weeks left until EOG tests begin.  In class we are working hard to make sure that students are prepared.  There are several important items which I need to share with you.
    1. School pictures or picture money was due before spring break.  If you haven't returned one of these, please do so ASAP.  
    2. Our awards day will be at 1:30pm on Wednesday, April 25th.  I will be sending out an email later this week to the parents of all students receiving awards.  If your child is getting an award, please feel free to join us to celebrate the accomplishments and hard work of all students receiving awards.
    3. Report cards for the 3rd marking period go home on Thursday.  Please sign the envelope and return it on Friday.
    4. Many students are running low on dry erase markers.  We use them daily in math, and I no longer have extras to provide to students.  In spite of some parent donations, some kids have to borrow markers daily.  Please check with your child to see if their markers are running out, and replace them as needed.
    5. The time has finally come to collect money for our field trip!  The trip is under a month away and we will be collecting money this week and next week.  The cost for students is $76.  If you are planning to attend and wish to drive on your own, the cost for you will be $29.  Until all students have paid for the trip, we don't know which parents will be able to ride the bus.  If you are on the waiting list for the bus, please pay the $29 for the trip now.  If you are able to ride the bus, we can collect the remaining $47 later.  Please do not send bus money in for you now.  If you plan to chaperone and have not had your school background check yet, please do so right away, since it can sometimes take a few weeks to come back.  The web address for it is www.harnettvolunteers.com.
    6. We will be tying rubber bands around our t-shirts to tie-dye on Friday.  If you have not yet sent in the $2.50 or the $.50 and a white cotton t-shirt, please do so before Friday.  These shirts will be used for our field trip and also for our field day, so it would be great if everyone could participate, even if they aren't planning to attend the field trip.

    Good Morning,

       It is really hard to believe how fast March is flying by!  It seems that the 3rd marking period just started and now it is under 3 weeks away from being done.  I have some updates which I would like to share with you.

    • First, the last day to turn in work for the 3rd marking period will be March 28.  I have to submit grades on the 29th, so anything turned in after the 28th won't be accepted for a grade.
    • Field trip permission slips were sent home at the beginning of the month and many people have returned them.  If you have not, please do so ASAP. If your child does NOT plan to attend, please email to let me know.
    • I gave students notes last week about making tie dye shirt for the field trip and also for field day (which will be later in the year).  I asked that students bring in either a plain white cotton shirt and 50 cents to cover the cost of dye, or $2.50 to cover the cost of the dye and a white shirt which I will purchase for them  I would like all money and shirts to be in by next Thursday, March 22, so that I have time to purchase the correct sizes of shirts that weekend, and we can put rubber bands on the shirts before spring break.  
    • Our Tarheel project presentations are this week.  It would be ideal for students to dress like the person they are presenting, but since not everyone has clothing to match the person they are presenting, it is not absolutely necessary.  If they don't dress up, they need to at least bring a prop which represents the person they are researching. For example, if they are researching a singer, they might bring a microphone.  If they are researching soccer player, they might bring a soccer ball.
    • We are running low on small soap containers which we take with us to bathroom breaks.  I have a couple jars of soap refills left, but the small containers with the pumps are slowly breaking and needing to be replaced.  If you are able to donate some, it would be appreciated. We are also running low on tissue.
    • We have been having numerous student conflicts in our room recently.  We have had class discussions explaining the importance of treating others with kindness, even when they aren't doing the same for you.  The policy of "If you don't have anything nice to say, just don't say anything at all," is one which needs to be paid close attention to.  If you can reinforce this at home, it would be much appreciated.

    Good Afternoon,

       I want to remind you that the Tarheel project timelines are due this coming Wednesday, which is March 7th and the trading cards are due the following day.  Students have been given plenty of time to research this in class, but may need to print out their paragraphs and pictures and arrange them on the timelines at home.  Most students have done a great job applying themselves and their work looks excellent!  I have a sign-up sheet in class for students who are unable to print at home.  They just need to let me know when they are done writing (by signing up on the papers in class) and share their documents with me on google docs.  If they need to do this, they will need to be ready to print by the end of the day Monday, so that I can get them the papers off  of the copier on Tuesday.  This will allow them to take them home and arrange them on their large timeline by Wednesday's due date.

        Also, permission slips for the ocean trip in May were distributed yesterday.  I would really like to have the permission slips back by the end of next week, so that I have a rough idea of who is going, but I will accept them later if it is necessary.  We are not accepting money until after spring break, so please don't send that in yet.

       As a final reminder, if you have not signed and returned your child's progress report, please do so ASAP.

    Good Afternoon,

          I hope that this message finds you happy and in good health.  I have some bits of old news to remind you of, and several bits of new information to share, as well.  The reminders will go first.
    • Our awards day is Thursday at 1:30.  If your child is receiving an award, you received an email stating so a couple of weeks ago.  Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our students.
    • We go outside for recess each day at 11:30 unless it is precipitating or the temperature is below freezing.  Please ensure that your child is dressed to go outside each day, even if it is chilly.
    • Report cards went home last Wednesday.  If you haven't returned the signed envelope yet, please do so ASAP.
    • We will be going to Western Harnett High School to see their students perform The Diary of Anne Frank next Wednesday (February 21).  We will be leaving Highland at about 8:50am and returning shortly before lunch.  If you haven't returned your permission slip or $4, please do so tomorrow.
    And now the new information!
    • Students were given new health contracts last Wednesday.  The first project is due this Friday, and one is due each Friday until they are all complete, just like last time.  It doesn't matter to me what order students choose to do the projects in, as long as they all get done in the end.
    • We are well into researching our famous Tar Heels.  Each student has chosen a person to research and we are dedicating time to it each day.  Students will have to complete a time line, with at least 6-8 items.  Each item on the time line should have a picture and and accompanying paragraph.  Students will also create a trading card about their tarheel and do a first person speech, dressed as the person they are researching.  We may also have a wax museum presentation but this isn't certain yet.  Specific due dates have not been set yet, but will most likely be in the first week of March.  I want to make sure that students have enough time to research in class, and will set due dates accordingly as we get closer to the end.  It is likely that students will need to put the finishing touches on this project at home, including assembling the time line.  We are doing the paragraphs here, but the finished products will need to be completed at home.  If you need help gathering supplies, please let me know ASAP so that I have time to find them before the due date.
    • Spring pictures are Friday, February 23.  The envelopes were distributed today.  Group pictures are $10 and must be paid for on the day the pictures are taken.  Individual pictures will be taken of everyone and sent home for you to review.  You will have the option to purchase them after you view them.

    Good Afternoon,

          I hope that you are having a terrific Tuesday! I would like to update you on a few things going on at school.
    1. The postcard book fundraiser is still going on.  So far our class has brought in 60 completed postcards.  Our school earns 50 cents for each one, so that adds up to $30 already.  If you haven't already assisted your child in filling in the books and returning them, you have until the end of the week.
    2. Permission slips for our trip to Western Harnett High School went home a couple of weeks ago, and some students still haven't returned them.  If your child is included in this, plesae send return them ASAP.  Also, we will be receipting money for this trip next week.  The cost is $4 per child.  
    3. Information sheets concerning the ocean field trip in May were distributed last Friday.  Please let me know if you would like to be on the waiting list for a seat on the bus.  Also, please feel free to contact me with any questions about the trip.
    4. Our school book fair is going on this week.  If your child would like to purchase books, please send the money to school with him/her this week.  Allowing students to self-select books is a great way to raise enthusiasm regarding reading.
    5. During a teacher meeting today, I was told that, according to our mid-year i-ready diagnostic data, 79% of the students in our class are currently proficient in math and 61% of our students are currently proficient in reading.  The only class scoring higher than ours at this point, is the class of gifted and talented students.  Our students are working exceptionally hard to do so well, and I appreciate all of the help at home which parents have been offering.  Remember to have your child read for at least 20 minutes every night and make sure that multiplication facts are memorized to continue this positive trend.  
    6. Forms from the Friendly Dental Van are being distributed today.  If you would like to utilize this service to have your child's teeth cleaned, please return the completed form no later than Monday, February 5.

    January 22, 2018

    Good Afternoon,

        I hope that you enjoyed your latest snowcation.  I am hopeful that this one will be the last of the year!  As a result of the snowcation, a few things have changed on the school calendar.  First, the cutoff day for the end of the 2nd marking period has been moved again.  The last day to turn in all work is this Friday, January 26th.  Report cards will go home on February 2nd.  
        On the optional teacher workday last Friday, I entered all grades which I have into the computer.  The students should know how to log in and see what is missing (if anything).  If you don't have your own powerschool account, I would recommend having your child log in under his/her account so that you can check it out.  Any missing work will be accepted through Friday.
        On Tuesday of last week, a super easy fundraiser envelope was sent home with students.  All that they have to do is fill out the packet of postcards with the names and addresses of family members or friends and return the packet.  Each returned post card earns the school 50 cents.  With a school of over 1100 kids, and 11 postcards in each book, that could add up to a lot of money.  Please return the post cards as soon as possible.  
        The permission slips to see The Diary of Anne Frank performed at Western Harnett High School went home the week between the snow storms.  Please return them as soon as possible.  Money will be due the week of February 5-9.
        Our class is on our last box of tissue and also running low on pencils.  If you are willing to donate some, it would be greatly appreciated.
        Lastly, we are spending a couple of weeks on geometry before moving on to fractions in math.  A strong knowledge of single digit multiplication facts is essential to be successful with fractions.  If your child is still struggling with them, please dedicate a little bit of additional homework each night to learning them.  Doing so will help them in the rest of their educational days!

    Good Afternoon,

         I hope that you had an excellent Christmas break and enjoyed your snow-cation as well!  I have numerous updates to share with you today.
    • As a result of the snow days, the end of our 2nd marking period has shifted a couple of days.  Report cards will now go home on February  2 instead of January 31.
    • Also, as a result of the snow days, the teacher workdays scheduled for January 23rd and 24th have been moved to January 25th and 26th.  There will now be school on the 23rd and 24th, and no school on the 25th and 26th.
    • Yearbook sales are now underway.  Orders are being taken online at https://online-pay.memorybook.com/parent.  The pay code for our school is 89644 and the cost is $20.  Orders will be taken through March 1, 2018.  Yearbooks usually arrive sometime in May or June.
    • The Scholastic Book Fair is once again coming to HES!  It will be here from January 29-February 2.  More information about our class' specific time to visit will be sent out once I know it.
    • The PTO Zaxby's night will be this Thursday, January 11 at the Zaxby's in Cameron.  10% of the sales between 5pm and 8pm will be given to the HES PTO.  If you are in the mood for chicken, this is the time to go!
    • Fourth grade students at HES will be attending a play at Western Harnett High School on February 21st.  The cost is $4 and permission slips will be going home within the next week.  Please be on the lookout for them.
    • Also be on the lookout for an information sheet about our field trip to the beach, which will take place in May.  That information can be expected before the end of the month.
    • My classroom stock of dry erase markers which I can give students is nearly depleted.  We use dry erase markers daily in math.  Please check with your child and replenish these if necessary.
    • Since our week last week was short, I will not be giving out new homework papers this week.  Students can turn in last week's homework at any point this week.  Several have already done so.  It is due no later than this Friday, though.  
    • The exception to that is the health project.  The due date for all projects to be turned in is still this Friday, January 12.  Several students have done so already.
    • If your child chose to participate in the science fair, the due date for projects to be turned in has been moved to this Friday, as well.  The original due date was tomorrow.

         We are so close to break that you can just smell it in the air!  The excitement is mounting with each second, and before you know it, school will be out and your kids will be home with you each day.  If you are looking for some academic things to keep them from going stir crazy, I have a few suggestions.
     
        The first is the Highland Elementary School winter break reading challenge.  It will be distributed to students today.  Reading is essential in all subject areas, and going more than 2 weeks without doing any of it can be enough to set students back.  That is why we have the reading challenge this year.  One sheet of paper is a calendar and the other is paper marshmallows with different places or ways to read.  Students are challenged to read in a different location or for a different reason for 20 minutes each day.  When they do one of the types listed on the marshmallows, they cut the marshmallows out and glue them the days of the calendar.  Students reading at least 10 of the days will be invited to participate in a hot chocolate party on January 12th.  The papers are due back on January 3rd.
     
        The second item is doing an experiment for the school science fair.  The science fair is optional for 4th graders this year, but I will give extra credit in science for doing a project.  Science fair projects must be experiments (not models, research papers or demonstrations).  For some information on what an experiment entails, you can watch this video http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/scientific-inquiry/scientific-methods.htm.  More information about it was distributed to students yesterday.  If your child chooses to participate, the projects are due on January 10th.  
     
       Lastly, many of you are aware of the iready program which we use at school.  It is a computer program which tests each child and then makes lessons tailor made to their specific needs.  Students use it regularly in school, but it can also be accessed at home.  It is recommended that students spend 45 minutes a week on the math portion and an additional 45 minutes a week on the reading portion.  Doing more over break wouldn't be a bad thing, either.  I would highly recommend spending some time using this over the break.

       I have a few items to share with you.

    1. Tomorrow is the last day to turn in book orders.  If you plan to order books, please do so by then.
    2. I gave students information about the school's Santa Shop today.  Our scheduled day is Thursday of this week, which is December 7th.  Items range from $.50 to $5.00.  If you would like your child to participate, please send money on that day.  It is also helpful to fill out the envelope listing who they need to shop for with a proposed budget.
    3. Our classroom party will be Thursday, December 14 at about 1:30.  If you plan to bring something, please let me know in advance so that we don't get 29 of the same thing.  One parent has already said that they are bringing a fruit tray and another is bring drinks, so those are already taken.  Please feel free to join us if you wish.
    4. Progress reports were distributed today.  Please sign them and return them tomorrow.  If you have questions about grades, I am always happy to discuss them with you.  However, I would recommend logging onto the online grading system and checking it out before doing so.  We have done it multiple times in class, so even if you don't have a username and password for the parent portal, your child should be able to access it from any computer and show it to you.
    5. The school science is coming up shortly after the break.  Participation is optional, but extra credit will be given for projects completed according to the guidelines which will be discussed with students soon.  If your child would like to participate, doing the experiments over break might be a good choice.  More information will be coming soon.
    6. Remember that health projects are due weekly.  The 3rd project should be turned in this week and the 4th one next week.  If your child decides to turn them in sooner, that is fine as well.

    Good Afternoon!  

         I want to update you about a few things in class.  First, I distributed book order forms today.  Ordering books through these isn't required, but allowing kids to choose their own books is a way to increase reading time.  If they feel that it is exciting, they are going to do it more.  I told the kids that they may want to request some books for Christmas from these orders.  If you decide to do this, and would like it to be a surprise, please let me know so that I don't give your child the books you order when they arrive.  If you would like to order online, the website is www.scholastic.com and our class code is GYTBT.  You are welcome to send in the order form and money, as well if you wish.  The last day to send in orders or to place them online will be Tuesday, December 5.  I will place the orders the next day to ensure that they arrive before Christmas break.  
        On a different note, I wanted to let you know that we will be having a classroom party during our last week of school before break.  I don't yet know which date, but will let you know once I do.  During our party, we will be doing a mug exchange, which is why I am telling you about it early.  The mugs will need to be good for either gender and should have a value of no more than $5.  Most dollar stores have them pre-assembled and already filled, for only a dollar.  If you will be unable to purchase one, please let me know with plenty of time so that I can purchase one for your child.
        In math we are about halfway through our unit on long division, and most children are doing a great job.  There are some who are struggling, though, as a result of not having their single digit multiplication facts memorized.  Please continue to work on this with your child, as it will be important in our units on fractions as well.
       Our school will be having an information night in conjunction with the 3rd grade concert on December 5th.  Each grade will have a table with useful information.  This will begin at 5:15pm and continue until 6:15pm.  The 3rd grade concert will begin at 6:30.  
         On a final note, as we approach our break, excitement builds daily, and behavior tends to decline.  I remind students daily of the behavioral expectations in our room, but it would be great if you would back that up at home, as well.  Even though we are approaching a long break we are still in school and the rules have not changed.  There is much work to be done between now and then, as well.

    I want to update you about some of the goings on in our classroom. First, I distributed papers with health assignments on them today. There are 6 different assignments on the paper and there will be one due each week until they are all complete. It doesn't matter to me which ones the kids do and submit in which order, as long as each child completes each assignment. For the first assignment on the paper, it mentions our class country study, and I told the kids that they may choose any country they would like for this project. Another talks about drink labels, and I asked them to add that they need at least 5 labels. If there are any supplies which you need help obtaining, please let me know well in advance and I will do my best to gather them for you. If you would prefer to have your child do all 6 assignments at once and turn them in, that is fine as well. There may be time to work on this in class, but at least part will most likely have to be done at home.
    The next item is that we are shifting our work slightly this week. Since we didn't have school last Friday and we won't have school next Thursday and Friday, we acted as though today was last Friday. We took our morning week quiz from last week and did our vocab test from last week. We will be doing this week's things starting tomorrow and take the tests next Monday. I am telling you this because the vocab homework has the words for Monday-Thursday and we will be doing them on Tuesday-Friday. If you would like to have your child do them and turn in the work on Friday, even though we won't have done all of the words at that time, that is fine. If you would prefer waiting until Monday to turn it in, that is fine as well.
    In math we are just about ready to finish our unit on multi-digit multiplication. Our test will be within the next few days. We will then be moving on to long division. Having single digit math facts memorized is still critically important. It would be be very helpful to review them verbally, using flash cards, or using an app on a regular basis. These facts will continue to be important through the remainder of 4th grade and then again in 5th grade.
