Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Overhills Elementary! Our students come first at Overhills and all decisions we make are based upon what is in our students' best interest.  We are a “Leader in Me” school so we strive to build leadership qualities within our staff and student population every day.  Our theme this year is “The Greatest Showman."  As we continue our “adventure” together we will strive for excellence in all we do. We will focus on one of the 8 Habits each month; however, Habit 5, "Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood," will continue to be our main focus this school year.  Steven Covey, the author of “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” stated that “most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”  Therefore, we strive to truly listen when someone else is speaking while striving to understand their point of view."  In addition, we will continue to create a climate of kindness throughout our building while being culturally sensitive.  Just like all of the characters in "The Greatest Showman," we want ALL of our students, staff members and parents to feel welcome, accepted, and valued regardless of their ethnicity, economic status, current circumstances, or academic ability.  Lastly, we will continue to synergize and focus on team building. A team is defined as “a group of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals and an approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable” (Katzenbach & Smith, 1993).

We are excited about the upcoming year as we continue to promote a culture of understanding, kindness, teamwork and leadership among our staff as well as with our students.  We will continue to build strong relationships with parents, students and each other as we teach, practice, and model the “7 (8) Habits of Highly Effective People” each and every day!

Let’s have a great year!
