Parent/Guardian Book Opt-Out Information
North Carolina House Bill 805 requires school districts to provide parents/guardians access to school and classroom library catalogs, and it gives parents the right to restrict their child’s access to specific books.
Parent/Guardian Responsibility and Acknowledgment
-
It is their responsibility to review the school and classroom library catalogs to identify titles for restriction and to complete the required steps for restricted access.
-
Restrictions apply only to the titles listed. All other titles remain available.
-
Opting out does not remove the book(s) from the school or classroom collection; it only prevents their child from accessing or checking them out.
Classroom Library Opt-Out Information
Classroom libraries are curated by individual teachers and may differ by class. Parents/guardians are encouraged to review available book lists (when provided by the teacher) before completing this process.
Book lists can be accessed:
-
On each school’s website by selecting the Destiny Discover button, or
-
Through the Harnett County Schools Destiny site directory, parents/guardians may select their child’s school and access available classroom library catalogs using Destiny Discover.
Steps to Opt Out of Classroom Library Titles:
-
Review your child’s classroom library list (if provided).
-
Identify the specific titles you do not want your child to access.
-
Complete the Parent/Guardian Book Opt-Out Form (link below).
-
Be sure to include the teacher’s name and the exact titles to be restricted.
-
-
Submit the form. Restrictions will apply only to the titles listed for that teacher’s classroom library.
