HCS Plan Ahead Guide

School breaks are a chance to recharge, spend time together, explore somewhere new and maybe learn something along the way.

Whether your family wants to stay close to home, take a day trip, pack the car for something bigger, explore a career field or spend part of the break serving others, we’ve gathered ideas for each extended break on the 2026-27 Harnett County Schools calendar.

This is intended to be a living guide. We’ll continue adding verified events, discounts and volunteer opportunities as organizations announce their 2026-27 schedules.

Got a fourth grader? Read this first.

The federal Every Kid Outdoors program gives U.S. fourth-grade students a free federal recreation pass for the 2026-27 school year, through Aug. 31, 2027. At sites that charge by vehicle, the pass generally covers everyone in one passenger vehicle. At sites that charge per person, it covers the fourth grader, all children under 16 and up to three adults. Educators can also obtain passes for their fourth-grade students. Parking, camping, special tours and some privately operated services are not included.

Need volunteer hours?

Look for Give Back under each break. We’ve included opportunities where students may be able to serve their community, gain hands-on experience and complete volunteer hours.

Age requirements, training, scheduling and documentation policies vary. Students should contact each organization before volunteering to confirm availability and whether their hours can be documented.

Before you go

Events, operating schedules, prices, promotions and volunteer opportunities can change. Families should confirm hours, ticket availability, age requirements, volunteer-hour documentation and offer terms directly with each organization before traveling or volunteering.

Harnett County Schools does not sponsor or endorse the businesses or attractions listed. This guide is intended to help families find educational, recreational and service opportunities during scheduled time away from school.

Know of something we missed?

Have a local event, family activity, discount, career-exploration opportunity or volunteer project we should add? Send it our way. We’ll review submissions and may add verified opportunities to this guide throughout the school year.
