Athletic Eligibility Requirements

Required Participation Forms

Before a student may try out, practice, or compete, the following forms must be completed and on file:

  • Current Physical Examination Form
    • A current NCHSAA-approved physical examination is required. Students and families must register in Aktivate and upload their completed physical as part of the athletic clearance process.

  • Consent to Treat Form
  • Concussion Awareness Form
  • Insurance Information Form

Academic Requirements

  • Students must pass at least 70% of courses taken during the previous semester. 
  • High School Only: Non-credit courses such as Office Assistant and Flex, do not count toward the 70% requirements because they do not receive a grade. 

Attendance Requirements

  • Students must be in attendance for at least 85% of the previous semester. 
  • Documentation of absences will be a significant factor in the appeals process. 
  • Doctor's notes should be provided whenever possible. 

Eligibility Determination 

  • Eligibility is determined within the first 8 school days of each semester. 
  • Once determined, eligibility remains in effect for the entire semester. 

School Assignment & Transfers

Students may only participate at the school serving their assigned attendance area unless they have been officially reassigned through the Harnett County Schools reassignment process. 

  • Some reassignments may require a 75-day waiting period before athletic participation. 
  • Reassignments made for athletic purposes may result sin 365 days of athletic ineligibility. 

Home School Students

  • Home school student participation is governed by HCS Board Policy 3620.
  • Students must meet all applicable residency, enrollment, academic, attendance, and athletic eligibility requirements established by the policy, North Carolina law, and the State Board of Education.

Additional Information

  • High School athletic eligibility is governed by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) and Harnett County Schools. 
  • Middle School athletic eligibility is governed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and Harnett County Schools. 
    • Note: 6th Grade students are not eligible to participate in football.
