Career Development

Major Clarity, with CommonApp integration, is the platform HCS utilizes for career and college readiness lessons. Major Clarity is an approved platform for the upcoming state Career Development Plan graduation requirement. The CDP graduation requirement will go into effect in 2024-2025 school year. Students access Major Clarity via application on Classlink.

The Harnett County Business Education Partnership is a private, non-profit organization made up of volunteers dedicated to helping students make informed educational and career decisions. To learn more, click on the logo. This group of business leaders, educators, and parents focuses on a variety of programs and resources. They work closely with Harnett County Schools to contribute to the broad educational achievements of students. The HCBEP sponsors the following activities:

• Job Shadowing

• 8th Grade Tours

• New Teacher Orientation Luncheon

• Community Based Learning Experiences

• Career Awareness visits at each high school

• Presentations through the Harnett County District Attorney's Office

• BUILD Harnett Competitions

• "Wish List" distributor/provider to local teachers in need of supplies from local businesses and industry

Central Carolina Community College (Lee Campus) annually host a "High School Instructional Day" for students who are seniors and undecided about their future plans.  Students in the Trades and Industrial courses, who would like to participate in this event, visit various community college programs in a one-day span.  This event is normally held in the month of October. 

Job Shadowing is a 1/2 day to whole day education experience in which a student visits a business or industry to observe the tasks and activities of a specific occupation. It is an opportunity for students to gain first-hand knowledge of an occupation in which they have shown an interest. The Job Shadowing experience is a practical and useful way for any student to explore career opportunities and begin planning for their future.  

The Harnett County Business Education Partnership promotes and sponsors the job shadowing program for high school students.  

The purpose of Job Shadowing is to:

• Develop an awareness of the education, training, and skills required in a specific occupation.

• Become familiar with the environment associated with a specific occupation.

• Identify the job-related characteristics required of specific careers.

• Determine the degree of interest in an identified occupation.

• Observe the job responsibilities of a person in a profession of your area of interest.

The student will gain:

• First-hand experience in a job setting related to your career interests

• Obtain a better understanding of job requirements

• Ability to make better career decisions

• Develop confidence in communicating with adults

• Improved self-image

• Increased motivation to excel in school

Career Awareness Fairs, sponsored by the Harnett County Business Education Partnership, are hosted annually at each Harnett County High School.  Local business, agency, and industry employers attend the annual Career Awareness Fairs to talk with juniors about their career field and career choices.  These are scheduled in the spring semester.  If you would like to volunteer to have a table at our CAF's, please email Shelby Robertson at srobertson@harnett.k12.nc.us.

Career Exploration provides students the opportunity to participate in a small group type setting of job shadowing.  Students from throughout the county are given the chance to explore a career by spending a half day with professionals in certain career fields where a one-on-one shadowing experience may not be an option.  These exploration experiences have been made available at VA Hospital, Central Carolina Community College, Campbell University, Godwin Manufacturing, Champion Homes, SAAB Barracuda, Harnett County Courthouse, The Organic Butcher Shop, CISCO RTP, and various other local employers.  For more information on upcoming career exploration opportunities, please contact the Career Development Coordinator at your local high school.
