Opt-Out Information

North Carolina House Bill 805 requires school districts to provide parents/guardians with access to school and classroom library catalogs and allows parents/guardians to request restricted access to specific library titles for their child.

Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

  • Parents/guardians are responsible for reviewing available school and classroom library catalogs, identifying titles they wish to restrict, and completing the district's required process to request restricted access.
  • Restricted access applies only to the specific titles identified by the parent/guardian. All other library materials remain available to the student.
  • Requesting restricted access does not remove a title from the school or classroom library collection. It only prevents the identified student from checking out, borrowing, or accessing that title through the school library or classroom library.

Classroom Library Opt-Out Information

Classroom libraries are curated by individual teachers and may differ by class. Parents/guardians are encouraged to review available book lists (when provided by the teacher) before completing this process.

Book lists can be accessed:

  • On each school’s website by selecting the Destiny Discover button, or

  • Through the Harnett County Schools Destiny site directory, parents/guardians may select their child’s school and access available classroom library catalogs using Destiny Discover.

Steps to Opt Out of Classroom Library Titles:

  1. Review your child’s classroom library list (if provided).

  2. Identify the specific titles you do not want your child to access.

  3. Complete the Parent/Guardian Book Opt-Out Form (link below).

    • Be sure to include the teacher’s name and the exact titles to be restricted.

  4. Submit the form. Restrictions will apply only to the titles listed for that teacher’s classroom library.

School Library Opt-Out Information

Parents/guardians may also restrict access to titles in the school library.

Through the Additional User Type in Destiny, parents and guardians can access the school library catalog, review both current and historical checkouts, and block specific titles so their child cannot check them out.

Steps to Opt Out of School Library Titles:

  1. Access Destiny and connect to your child's account.

  2. Review Library Activity

    • View current checkouts and checkout history to see which books your child has accessed.

  3. Identify Titles to Block

    • Search the catalog for the specific titles you do not want your child to check out.

    • Note the exact title and author to ensure accurate restrictions.

    • To block a title from being checked out, click the three dots next to the book title and select the option to restrict access.

  4. Restrictions Applied

Note: Anderson Creek Primary uses the public library system, so district book opt-outs do not apply here.
