Mrs. Katie Hancock
Hi! My name is Katie Hancock and I teach both the AVID elective, as well as the Wonders of Math elective.
This is my eleventh year teaching. I have actually spent most of my time here at Highland Middle School. I have been here since the school opened back in 2014. During my time here I am "best known" as a 7th grade math/pre-algebra teacher, but I have also taught 7th grade science, advanced 6th grade math, STEM, and have served as the AIG lead teacher. Prior to working at Highland, I taught 6th and 7th grade math at Overhills Middle, so I have had the opportunity to teach many sets of siblings! In addition to my middle school experience, I also worked at an inner-city elementary school in Charleston, SC teaching math and science to fifth graders.
While I started out as a Chemistry major at NC State (hence my love for NC State basketball), after my freshman year, I decided to change my major to Elementary Education and transferred to Appalachian State in Boone, NC where I eventually graduated. I started my master's degree at the College of Charleston during my first year teaching in Math and Science Education. I took a break for a few years, then was right back at it, getting my AIG licensure from Duke University. And finally, just last year, I received my National Board Certification in Early Adolescence Mathematics.
One of the things I like most about Highland is large population of military dependents in our school. I was born on Ft. Bragg, and grew up a military brat. My dad served in the Army for 30 years, so I can related to living in countless states and other countries. I have been married for 8 years to my husband Nolan who is a district attorney. We have one ADORABLE daughter Emerson, who is 5 years old, and a chubby English Bulldog named Bella.
Despite the crazy, I absolutely love teaching middle school. I look forward to working with you and your child. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need anything.
