Wearing Green, Standing Together: HCS Marks Wear Green Wednesday

One color. One simple message: You belong here.

Green filled schools across Harnett County Schools on Wednesday as students and staff took part in Wear Green Wednesday, part of Start With Hello Week.

From green shirts and accessories to schoolwide activities, the color served as a visible reminder of unity, inclusion and connection — and of the role everyone can play in creating a school where people feel seen and valued.

That message matters. Research cited by Sandy Hook Promise found that about one-third of students say they don't feel like they belong at school. Start With Hello was created to address that sense of social isolation by teaching young people to notice others, reach out and build connections.

Across the district Wednesday, schools found different ways to put that message into action.

Students and staff wore green together, while activities throughout the day encouraged students to connect with others and remind their classmates that they have a place in their school community. Students also shared positive and motivational messages designed to brighten someone else's day.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines school connectedness as students feeling that adults and peers at school care about them as individuals and about their learning. Students who feel connected at school are less likely to experience a range of health risks and are more likely to have better attendance, grades and graduation outcomes.

That's what makes Wednesday about more than a green shirt.

Belonging is built through everyday moments: learning someone's name, inviting someone into the conversation, offering encouragement or simply saying hello.

On Wear Green Wednesday, HCS students and staff are showing what can happen when those small moments come together.

Wear green. Show unity. Help someone know they belong.
