Section 504 and the American with Disabilities Act

Section 504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil rights law intended to protect individuals with disabilities from discrimination. Section 504 protects qualifying students by prohibiting these students from being excluded from public schools, or being denied the benefits of the public schools, because of their disability.  Students may receive accommodations and modifications if they meet eligibility requirements.  Each Harnett County School has a 504 Chairperson who monitors eligibility and implementation of Section 504 plans locally and the District 504 Coordinator ensures compliance.

For compliance concerns, please contact the Harnett County Schools District 504 Coordinator, Lauren Cappola, at (910) 893-8151 ext. 301
