Star Academy Community Kitchen: An Equitable Food Initiative

Through partnerships with the Ethan Nicholas Foundation and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast NC, Harnett County Schools launched its second on-site food pantry.

The Star Academy Community Kitchen will provide accessible food that decreases food insecurity and promotes a healthy diet, while encouraging community service. All students enrolled in grades 6-12 will receive groceries, including easy-to-prepare meals, during weekends and school breaks. Hygiene products and household items, such as toilet paper, Lysol wipes, and hand sanitizer, will be distributed monthly, or as needed. School social workers and family engagement specialists will provide for students who have dire needs throughout the week.

Kimberly Winslow, lead family engagement specialist, emphasizes the importance of having a shared, equitable space for students. “It’s such a blessing to serve students based upon equity and not just need. The Star Academy Community Kitchen allows everyone to have access to the same items regardless of socioeconomic status. “Food is an essential basic human need, and it’s important to maintain proper hygiene. For these reasons, I encourage everyone to accept these items for themselves or to help someone else.”

Aside from the benefits of food and support, the students are also learning about the gift of giving, interpersonal skills, and economic processes. “It is truly a wonderful experience for our STAR community, students, and staff,” states principal Christy Thomas. Special thanks to STAR Student Body President, Toby Hayes and Vice President, Jeffrey Huggins for all their hard work and dedication to this project.
