November 14th is #WorldDiabetesDay: Meet Ava McWhorter

Ava is a sophomore at Western Harnett High School. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was only 9 years old. Ava is thankful for a strong family support system. Her family has made sure to incorporate her needs into their lives. When she was diagnosed, her father switched to diet soda and learned to count and control his intake of sugar and carbohydrates.

The biggest challenge for Ava's family was regulating her blood sugar at night. She now has a continuous glucose monitor which will alarm when her blood sugar is too high or too low. She is grateful for her family and says that everyone at school and the community has been very supportive and understanding.

WHHS school nurse, Ms. Rebecca Campbell serves as an advocate for students like Ava. The health office is accessible to students for assistance and support.

She is knowledgeable and understands the seriousness of the disease. Her advice for those who are newly diagnosed is that “It's an adjustment, but it gets easier to live with it”. Ava says that the experience has taught her to be more independent and responsible. It has taught her to stand up for herself when needed and to “quit caring about what other people think ”.
