Meet the Teacher

Mrs. Andrea Tomala

Hello Benhaven Bulldogs! My name is Andrea Tomala and I am a Reading Recovery teacher. I am originally from Olean, NY, but have lived and taught in North Carolina for 17 years. I live in the Broadway community with my husband, Matt, and my 2 sons Chase and Ben. When I am not teaching I enjoy time with my family, trips to the beach, swimming in the pool and spending time outdoors. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from SUNY Fredonia, a Master's degree in Reading from Edinboro University, and additional certificates in Reading Recovery from UNC Wilmington and AIG certification from Campbell University. I am also a National Board Certified teacher. This is my 15th year of teaching in Harnett County-4 years teaching 4th grade, 2 years as a reading specialist for grades K-5, and 10 years as a Reading Recovery Teacher. I absolutely love my job! Being a support to teachers and parents along with watching readers and writers grow and bloom is the best!

What is Reading Recovery?

Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term intervention for children who performs low in literacy in first grade. Children meet individually with a specialty trained teacher for 30 minutes each day for an average of 12-20 weeks. The goal is for children to develop effective reading and writing strategies in order to work within an average range of classroom performance.

Students referred for the program are obtained from the classroom teachers and are then given a series of assessments called the "Observation Survey." This includes letter identification, word identification, hearing sounds in words, and reading level.
