Meet the Teacher
Mr. Bowder

Welcome back to another year!! My name is Mr. Browder and once again I will be your guide on this journey of self expression that we call art. This year our journey will take us back in time, all around the planet, we will dive into the art and culture of numerous peoples around the world, and with a little hard work we will jump into the creative potential of the future. We have managed to secure the art room for the third year in a row, and we are going to continue to make the absolute best of it. Which means...its time to get MESSY!
DISCLAIMER: All of the media we use is non-toxic, and MOST will wash out easily. HOWEVER, there are some media that will absolutely destroy clothing. I implore you, PLEASE do not send your artists to the studio in their Sunday best. I need them focused on the media getting on their paper, not the media that might end up on their clothes.

Grade Overviews
Kindergarten
In kindergarten we spend the bulk of our time learning, and reviewing the basic precepts of art education. Beginning with the fundamental understanding of the Elements of Art and how we incorporate them into each piece we make. Books are an essential aspect of what we do in Kindergarten. The lessons are coupled with a piece of literature.
First Grade
First grade art is a journey around the world. Beginning right here at home, we will travel around the world, looking at, discussing, and creating artwork from many different cultures.
Second Grade
Second grade is a journey through art history. We work from a timeline throughout the year. Beginning with Aboriginal art of Australia, and ending in the mid twentieth century.
Third Grade
Color, color, color, and more color. Third grade is an exploration of color theory, and how we as artists can use color to enhance the feel of our work. As opposed to simply using color to cover the page.
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade art focuses primarily on NC artists, and art influenced by our great state. Alongside a large amount of math influenced projects aimed at reinforcing information that will be covered on their math EoG.
Fifth Grade
Firth grade is an exploration of the three broad artistic styles. Abstraction, Realism, and Non-Objective

Competitions
Throughout the year I receive information on art competitions from around the country. Most of which are attached to some type of scholarship. I encourage students to participate in as many of these as possible. I share the information and post it in the classroom, but I will also be listing it here, so that you the parents can also see the criteria.
THE CONTEST
The contest is our year round, in house competition. It was created to foster independent creation on the part of our young artists.
The rules are as follows:
Each student may submit one piece of work per day that we are in school. Work can be put in my hand, placed in the staff mail box by the classroom teacher, or dropped in the basket hanging by my door.
The artist’s name AND teacher’s name must be on the work, or I can not give credit to the class, and the work will be discarded.
All work must be original. I will not accept coloring sheets.
Work can be as large as the artists wants but must not be smaller than 4x6.
Artist’s may use any media that they prefer, but it must be a 2 dimensional work of art. I do not have the storage facilities for 3D work.
