Meet the Teacher

Mrs. Elizabeth Langston

Mrs. Elizabeth Langston

My name is Elizabeth Langston.  I was born in Puerto Rico to a Cuban father and a Puerto Rican mother.  At 18 months of age, we moved to Miami, Florida where I attended school and was raised in a Spanish speaking home.  I myself was in an ESL class until third grade.

Teaching is my PASSION!  I love to help children succeed in school, but most importantly life.  As they say, "It takes a village to raise a child", so I hope that this school year WE (students, teachers, and parents) can collaborate to lead our children to successful futures.

Philosophy: I believe that all children can and will learn if you make lessons fun and applicable to their life.

FAQ About ESL

What is ESL?  How does my child qualify to be in ESL classes?  ESL is English as a Second Language. It is for students that may have another language at home besides English.  When students are enrolled into Harnett County Schools, parents most fill out a form called a Home Language Survey. The survey asks questions about the child's language(s) at home. If anything other than English is given as an answer, we will give the students a screener to determine their academic English skills in the areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The results are used to determine whether or not they will receive ESL services.

What do the acronyms ESL, ELL and LEP mean?  ESL: English as a Second Language.  Also considered the service that EL/ML students receive.

EL: English Learner
ML: Multilingual Learner
Both EL and ML are terms that describe students that receive ESL services. ML is the most current term, which will eventually replace EL.

What do students do in ESL classes?

The main focus of ESL classes is to improve the academic English of ELL in the areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.  To attain this goal, we use MANY strategies in ESL class. The 3 top strategies are Words Their Way, Guided Reading and Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP). SIOP is an intense strategy and constantly interwoven in my daily lessons. Because of this, it constantly seems like my students are "playing", and they are, because interaction and background knowledge is so very important for ML students.

Words Their Way: Words Their Way is a developmental spelling, phonics, and vocabulary program. Words Their Way is intended to be a part of a balanced literacy plan that includes fluency, comprehension and writing. Word study is implemented as a small component of the literacy plan but it is also interwoven in actual reading and writing texts, because of this, we only spend about 15 minutes daily on Words Their Way.

Guided Reading: Guided reading is a teaching approach designed to help individual readers build an effective system for processing a variety of increasingly challenging texts over time. Guided reading is not an exercise to practice reading skills. It is research-based, professionally energized, highly targeted, scaffolded reading instruction that propels all students toward confident, independent reading of high quality grade level books across a diverse array of literature and informational genres. Reading well means reading with deep, high quality comprehension and gaining maximum insight or knowledge from each source.

SIOP: The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model is a research-based and validated instructional model that has proven effective in addressing the academic needs of English learners throughout the United States.
The SIOP Model consists of eight interrelated components:
Lesson Preparation, Building Background , Comprehensible Input , Strategies , Interaction , Practice/Application , Lesson Delivery , Review & Assessment
Using instructional strategies connected to each of these components, teachers are able to design and deliver lessons that address the academic and linguistic needs of English learners.
