FIRST LEGO League

FIRST LEGO League challenges our students to think like scientists and engineers. During the eight-ten week season, teams work together on four components: Core Values, Innovative Project, Robot Design, and Robot Game. The "Core Values" are the heart of FIRST LEGO League. By embracing the Core Values, participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork. For the "Innovative Project" component, students identify a real-world problem, based on the season's theme, research the problem, and design an innovative solution. For the "Robot Design" and "Robot Game", students build, test, and program an autonomous robot to solve a set of missions based on the season's theme.

At the end of the season, students attend a Saturday regional competition along with other schools across the state. At competition, students participate in three morning interview sessions based on the three components: Core Values, Innovative Project, and Robot Design. During each session, students give a timed presentation and then are interviewed by judges. During the afternoon, students participate in the Robot Game which consists of three robot competition rounds in which their robot performs missions. At the end of the day, there is an awards ceremony. At this time, schools may be invited to attend the state competition.

In Harnett County, ten or less Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) students in Grades 4 & 5 are selected to be a part of the team. The team meets every week. They work really hard but have a tremendous amount of fun!

The 2017-2018 team won the "Inspiration" Award. This award celebrates a team that is empowered by their FIRST LEGO League experience and displays extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit.

The 2017-2018, 2018-2019, and 2019-2020 teams all advanced to the state competition in Greensboro, NC.
