Meet the Teacher

Mrs. Lori Winans

Mrs. Lori Winans

My name is Mrs. Lori Winans.  I married the love of my life, Justin Winans, in 2006.  We have two kids, Jordan and Asher, who keep us busy with church and sports (especially travel softball).  I began my teaching journey in 2007 and moved to Harnett County Schools in 2015. For the first 15 years of my career, I spent teaching Health and Physical Education, but in 2022 I moved to the classroom full-time to teach AVID. I am excited about this adventure.  If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

If you ever have questions about what we are learning, please feel free to email me.  I also attached a link to the AVID Curriculum Standards tab.  This will give you a breakdown of the objectives so you know exactly what is being covered.

I'm including some basic information about things you need to know for my class.

Grading Policy - Work always has a due date!  With that said, the majority of the time, students are allowed to turn work in late.  There are very few assignments that cannot be made up, but students are notified when that happens, and they know there is an all-or-nothing deadline.  But, to hold students accountable (and to get them ready when they have due dates for bills) there is a deduction when work is turned in late.

- 10 points off per day when an assignment is late

- I stop taking points off after day 5

- I take into consideration absent days (but ALL projects have a hard deadline)

- I will NOT accept missing/late work more than 3 weeks after the original deadline

- ON A POSITIVE NOTE, I do give 5 points of extra credit (added to the earned grade) to each assignment when it is turned in early.

Supply List (FOR AVID ONLY)

- 3-ring binder - You will NEED 1 that is used for all of your classes (2 in.)

  • Zipper Pouch

  • Sheet protectors

  • Dividers (at least 6)

  • Pens & Pencils

  • Erasers

  • Notebook Paper

  • Highlighters

  • Agenda

  • 3-hole punch pocket folder

  • Composition Notebook (This will be used for just AVID and will be left in the classroom)

*Except for the composition notebook, all of the items on this list will also be used in your other classes.  AVID students are required to have one large binder where they will carry their notes, assignments, etc for all of their classes.  This “AVID binder” is an integral component of our class and will be graded regularly for organizational purposes.

-Tissues, hand sanitizer, soap, and cleaning wipes are appreciated. I am allergic to aloe, so please make sure that these items are without aloe.

Schedule

We have an A/B schedule so I will see your child every other day.

Daily Schedule

HMS Elective Schedule - TBD

Google Classroom

This year your child will need to be accessing Google Classroom regularly. The classroom is where many assignments and resources are located. There will also be easy access to the class calendar for assignments. As a parent, to be added to the Google Classroom you must have your child join the classroom, which will give you an assignment summary at the end of each week.
