Assistant Principal

My name is Dr. Tamekkia Cotton and I am the Assistant Principal at Dunn Elementary School.  I received my Associate of Arts degree from Central Carolina Community College in July of 2001.  I began my career with Harnett County Schools in 2002, where I was employed at Boone Trail Elementary School as a Teacher Assistant for 5 ½ years….3 of which I was also a Bus Driver.  In May of 2007, I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Fayetteville State University and in August of that same year, I began teaching 1st grade.  I taught 1st and 2nd grades at Boone Trail Elementary School for about 7 years.  In March of 2014, I completed my coursework for my Masters’ degree from Gardner-Webb University.   In March of 2014, I transitioned to the role of Assistant Principal at Overhills Elementary School. In May of 2014, I graduated from Gardner-Webb University with my Master of Arts degree in Executive Leadership.  In July of 2014, I transferred to Highland Elementary School as Assistant Principal until February of 2018. At the end of February 2018, I transitioned to Dunn Elementary, where I am currently.

My goal while serving as Assistant Principal at Dunn Elementary is to make sure that our school provides a quality classroom environment in which all students feel valued and respected by the teacher and by fellow students. It is also my goal to work hard to develop positive relationships with all students, maintain high expectations of our students and to, as a school, help to plan explicit teaching activities that stimulate students' interest.

I am excited to introduce myself as the new school administrator for Harnett County Schools. With a wealth of experience in educational leadership and a strong commitment to student success, I bring a dynamic vision to our school.

Having dedicated numerous years to fostering academic excellence and innovation, I am well-equipped to support our students, teachers, and staff in achieving their highest potential. My background in developing and implementing effective educational strategies will be invaluable as we continue to enhance our programs and initiatives.

I am passionate about creating a positive and inclusive school environment where every student feels valued and empowered. I am eager to collaborate with families, educators, and community members to ensure that our school remains a nurturing and supportive place for learning and growth.
