Meet Dr. Thompson

Hello, my name is Dr. Benika Thompson and I am the proud principal of Overhills Middle School. I began my career in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) as a sixth-grade science and language arts teacher at Philo Middle School in 2001 and remained there for four years. I left Philo and joined the staff of Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy and then Jefferson Middle School, where I served as curriculum coordinator. I then served at the district level as director of science K-12 and then accepted the position of principal at Philo-Hill Magnet Academy. For the 2022-2023 school year, I was the principal of the WS/FCS Virtual Academy. In total, I served WS/FCS for 22 years. I am so happy to be back at home in Harnett County Schools.
I am a proud graduate of Harnett County Schools. I attended Johnsonville Elementary School, Benhaven and Western Harnett Middle Schools, and graduated from Western Harnett High School. As a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, I attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNC-G) where I received my Bachelor of Science degree in middle grades education. I also became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. while at UNC-G. I earned my master's degree in school administration from Appalachian State University and a doctorate in educational leadership with a specialization in curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix. I am a proudly published researcher. My first research study was Science Teacher Self-Efficacy and Student Achievement: A Quantitative Correlational Study (2015). I believe that authentic relationships and collaboration between staff and families can create a synergy that promotes students' engagement and learning which also increases student achievement.

Meet Mr. Capps

Hello, my name is Nicklaus Capps. I am a Fayetteville native and graduated from Seventy-First High School. From there I went to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where I received my bachelor's degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Biology. My first internship at that time was with a Middle School in Wilmington, NC. After graduating, I moved back home and started my teaching career at Double Byrd High School. There I taught both Physical Education and Anatomy/Physiology. I coached multiple sports- Men’s Varsity Soccer, baseball, and bowling. I taught and coached at the high school level for 8 years, during which I received two master's degrees: one in Physical Education and the other in School Administration. My first administration position was with Moore County Schools, where I was split between two elementary schools. Shortly after working at the elementary level, I became the assistant principal at Union Pines High School in Moore County. I worked for several years as an assistant principal. In 2020, I returned home to Fayetteville, NC, and became the At Risk Coordinator for a Second Chance Academy at Westover High School. I worked closely with the administration staff with different students and helped alleviate barriers to learning, in the hopes that my students would be able to return back to a regular classroom setting. I joined Harnett County Schools in 2022 and have served as Triton High School’s Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. Although I enjoyed every aspect of my job at Triton and grew tremendously under Principal Jones and the Harnett County Schools Administrative team, I am excited to be joining Overhills Middle School for the 2024 school year. This will be my first middle school experience, since completing my internship many years ago. I am looking forward to building relationships with the staff, students, and families of your wonderful school.
I am married to my beautiful wife, Dr. Molly Capps (Principal of McDeeds Creek Elementary School in Moore County). I have three wonderful children, 2 girls and a boy; Kate (12 years old and a rising 7th grader), Cooper (9 years old and a rising 5th grader), and our little boy Jackson (6 years old and going into the 1st grade in the fall). We also have one fur baby, our golden retriever named Beau. I am extremely honored and humbled to be a part of the Overhills Middle School family.
