Althea Richards

I am Althea Richards, a teacher whose experience exceeds fifteen years. I pursued my Bachelor degree in Education, specializing in the area of Language and Literacy, at The Mico University College in Kingston Jamaica. There, I graduated with Honors. Prior to that, I obtained my Teaching Diploma at the Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College in Montego Bay Jamaica. I am driven by a quote of my country man Marcus Garvey: “ Up, you mighty race! Accomplish what you will.” Additionally, I am guided by the mantra, “Reach for the Stars Step by Step.” With these as food for thought, I believe every child can learn regardless of his/ her abilities. It is therefore imperative that as a teacher, I create an environment that is conducive to learning- maximizing the full potential of each student. Such an environment can be partly created by tapping into students’ cultural background. “Cultural learning allows individuals to acquire skills that they would be unable to do independently over the course of their lifetimes.” (Carel P. & Burkart 2011 ). It is my intention to execute my craft to the best of my ability, enabling my students to be productive citizens of the twenty- first century.
