Following HCS Policy 4136, Overhills Middle School students are encouraged to dress in a manner that is comfortable and conducive to learning. Students shall refrain from clothing that:
violates a reasonable, nondiscriminatory dress code adopted and publicized by the school;
is substantially disruptive (for information on gang-related attire, see policy 4328, Gang-Related Activity);
is provocative or obscene; or
endangers the health or safety of the student or others.
General clarifications:
Clothing and attire with any symbols or styles frequently associated with intimidation, violence, or violent groups are not allowed. Bandanas or bandana-related
clothing (regardless of color) in the form of pants, jackets, or t-shirts may not be worn or displayed on school grounds.
Clothing and items with messages or illustrations that are lewd, derogatory, indecent, vulgar, or advertising any product or service not permitted by law to minors such as drugs, illegal substances, tobacco, and alcohol are not allowed. Furthermore, clothing that promotes mistreatment of people, hate speech or promote disorderly conduct is prohibited from school grounds and school-related functions.
Clothes must be worn in a way such that genitals, buttocks, breasts, and nipples are fully covered with opaque fabric. Clothes should minimally expose armpits. Clothing should cover the body from one armpit across to the other armpit and down to the mid-thigh. Any garment that reveals undergarments or areas of the body generally covered by undergarments will be considered inappropriate to wear.
Accessories or anything used to accessorize in a manner that conceals facial identity is not permitted.
Individual exceptions for head coverings and face accessories shall be approved by the school administrators for medical and religious reasons. Face masks that comply with the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are permitted.
To further clarify the OMS Dress Code:
Outerwear and accessories – Students are encouraged to dress appropriately for outside weather. Students should appropriately store these items upon arrival.
Students are permitted to wear hoodies. For the safety of all, while inside the building, on the school bus, or outdoors for educational activities, students should refrain from covering their heads on their head inside the school building or on the school bus.
Hats, earmuffs, scarves, handkerchiefs, combs, headsets, sunglasses, protective hair accessories, or any distracting headgear, should be removed upon arrival.
Spiked, chained, and metal accessories are not permitted at school. This includes jewelry, belts, belt buckles, and, bracelets.
“Stiletto/pointy/spiked” fingernails or body are prohibited.
Tops – Students are permitted to wear sleeved and sleeveless tops. Tops should be long enough to overlap the beltline of the bottoms and allow for normal movement throughout the day. Sleeveless tops should have straps at least 1” across. These items should prevent the exposure of the abdomen, back, and side skin and meet the waistline/beltline of the bottom garment.
Bottoms- Students are permitted to wear jeans, pants, sweat/ yoga pants, shorts, skirts, and skorts. These items must be appropriately fitted to connect to the top garment preventing the exposure of the back side, abdomen, and side skin. These items must cover the mid-thigh. Textured/ ripped items must not expose skin above the mid-thigh.
Shoes- Students are required to wear proper footwear for safety reasons. Shoes must have supportive soles and appropriate tread to prevent slipping. During certain school-related activities involving athletics and STEM labs, shoes should protect the toes and heels of the foot. Slippers do not comply with the safety standard and should not be worn at school.
Pajamas, onesies, nightgowns, robes, blankets, and costumes will on be approved for special school events.
