A Brief History of Our School:

Triton High School is a traditional public high school which opened in October, 1985 and currently houses approximately 1,200 students in grades nine through twelve and over 100 instructional staff members. Located at 215 Maynard Lake Road in Erwin, North Carolina 28339, Triton is one of six high schools in the Harnett County Schools system.

Triton is composed of students from the eastern side of Harnett County; the three distinct communities of Coats, Dunn, and Erwin, and the following feeder schools: Coats Elementary, Dunn Elementary, Erwin Elementary, Coats-Erwin Middle School, and Dunn Middle School.

The school’s colors are Royal Blue, Gray, and White.

The mascot is the Hawk.

Ground was broken for Triton High School on October, 1983.

Those present were:

Superintendent R. A. Gray, Harnett County Commissioners, and the three student council presidents of the schools that would consolidate into Triton and they were: Dunn, Erwin, and Coats High Schools. Construction took a little over two years due to weather related issues.

The doors of Triton finally opened to students in October, 1985, with Leonard Arnold as the first principal. The school was officially dedicated in April, 1986. He remained principal until 1992 when he was elevated to the position of Human Resources Director of Harnett County Schools following the retirement of Jerry R. Ennis. Mr. Arnold was followed as principal by Dan Curtis Honeycutt (who later became HCS Superintendent), William “Brooks” Matthews, Earl Lee “Chip” Mangum, III, Ryan L. McNeill, and currently, Marshall N. Jones.

Our Nest:

Triton is home to a sprawling campus with a two-story main building that houses classrooms, laboratory space, industrial grade kitchens, computer labs, a two story media center, gymnasium, and large auditorium- the pride of our campus.

Triton also boasts a complete Vocational Building with shops that serve a variety of CTE content areas including: Animal Science, Horticulture, Electrical Trades, Carpentry, Automotive, and Welding. There are also six learning cottages.

In addition to the main building area, the Hawks’ Nest is comprised of a beautiful athletic complex hosting football, soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, sand volleyball, cross country, and track and field events. We are looking forward to the construction of a new Ag Barn to serve our HCS Agriculture Academy on the grounds of Triton’s campus in 2023.
