Western Harnett Community Profile

The Western Harnett High School community is primarily rural with some cluster of suburban development. The school population has grown from an average of 960 students in the early 1990's to over 1700 students in 2003. The school was divided and now houses 1450+ students for the 2016/2017 school year. Approximately one-fourth of the student body is military connected. The community is readily accessible to Fayetteville and Sanford in surrounding counties via NC Hwy 87. The school is located eleven miles from Lillington, the county seat.

WHHS has an enrollment of approximately 1450+ in grades 9 through 12. WHHS is accredited by the State Department of Public Instruction and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. WHHS is a 3-A high school governed by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. The WHHS Eagles compete in the following sports: football, basketball, girl's softball, soccer, track and field, cross country, golf, girl's volleyball, wrestling, and tennis.

WHHS has extensive academic and vocational programs. It is the policy of Harnett County Schools that all students are admitted to Career and Technical Education courses without regard to race, sex, religion, national origin, or handicapping condition. Special programs are available to exceptional children who meet state guidelines in Learning Disabilities, Educable Mentally Handicapped, Trainable Mentally Handicapped, Academically Gifted, and Behaviorally Emotionally Handicapped. 

WHHS has a variety of advanced Placement courses available for students seeking a college credit. These AP courses are English III & IV, US History, European, Probability and Statistics, Computer Science, Biology, Calculus, and Chemistry. Honors Courses include: Honors English I, II, III, IV, French III and IV, Spanish III, IV, Honors US History, Honors Algebra II, Geometry, PreCalculus, and Honors Anatomy & Physiology.

GPA and Class Rank

Rank in class is computed at the end of each semester. All students in the class are included and ranking is cumulative from grades 9 through 12. GPA and class rank are calculated by a standard method by all public high schools in North Carolina. All AP classes carry two additional quality points while all honor/advanced classes carry one additional quality point. All other courses in the curriculum are not weighted and follow the scale below:

  • 90-100%=4.00

  • 80-89%=3.00

  • 70-79%=2.00

  • 60-69%=1.00

  • 59% and below=0.00
