Practice at Home

Every WHMS Band Student is expected to practice their instrument at home. 30 minutes a day, seven times a week, would be ideal, but is not always realistic. The more you practice your instrument, the better you will play and perform. Here are some tips to get you started!

  • Find a dedicated area in your home to practice your instrument everyday

  • A chair and metal folding music stand will help you practice proper posture and playing position

  • Set a dedicated time everyday after school to practice your instrument at home

  • Limit distractions (such as electronics)

  • Play long tones

  • Play lip slurs (brass)

  • Play scales

  • Play exercises from your Essential Elements Book or Habits of a Successful Musician Book

  • Play concert music, pep band music, jazz band music, etc.

  • Play music you want to play

  • Have fun
