Yesterday was summer solstice. This is the longest day and shortest night in the Northern Hemisphere and marks the first day of summer. As of today, June 22nd, 2023 Harnett County Schools has successfully graduated 1,390 students from six schools with a scholarship total of $12,332,444 dollars. We would like to thank our students, staff, and families for a wonderful school year! There is always work to be done, but we have plenty to celebrate! JUNETEENTH 2023 JUNETEENTH is short for June 19th. It commemorates Emancipation Day, when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865. By the time the troops arrived to ensure all Black people were freed, two and a half years have already passed since President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This date has been celebrated by Black Americans since the 19th century. Just last June, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, making it a federal holiday for all Americans to commemorate the end of slavery.
