OMS young scientists began working on their science fair projects during the 1st quarter of the school year. With the support of the teachers and families, these students successfully presented their research at the OMS Science fair on January 13, 2025. From this competition, the results were as follows:
Biological Science A: Christian Gilbert (1st Place - How Harmful Are the Beverages We Consume Daily?) and Gabriel Thomas (2nd Place - Amazing Culture of Bacteria)
Biological Science B: Nathalie Huymaier (1st Place - Can You Spy AI?)
Chemistry: Charles McKinney (1st Place - Candy Chromatography) and Abigail Nichols and Hailey Hoover (2nd Place - Stoplight Experiment)
Physics: Donnell Wiggins (1st Place - Roller Coaster Challenge) and Jacob Lahr (2nd Place - Balloon Car Battle Royale).
Technology and Engineering: Jeremiah Zamora (1st Place - Which Tower Can Withstand an Earthquake?) and Jeremiah Benavidez (2nd Place - How Can Windmill Power Houses?)
Environmental Science: Lallani Felisan Choate (1st Place - How Does Chlorine Water Affect the Plants?) and Aaliyah Gaskins (2nd Place - Can Radish Seeds Grow Without Soil?)
Principal's Choice Award: Danielle Harbst and Lilyia Rousanville - Polluted to Pristine
On January 30, 2025, Harnett County Schools hosted the district science fair. OMS young scientists placed in the following categories:
Earth/Environmental: Aaliyah Gastkins (2nd Place)
Physics: Jacob Lahr (2nd Place)
Chemistry: Abigail Nichols and Hailey Hoover (2nd Place)
Technology and Engineering: Jeremiah Zamora (2nd Place)
Biological Science B: Natalie Huymaier (1st Place)
The North Carolina Region IV Science and Engineering Fair was hosted at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke on February 14, 2025. Natalie Huymaier (Biological Science B), Abigail Nichols, and Hailey Hoover (Chemistry) emerged with first places in their respective categories and will advance to the 37th Annual North Carolina State Science and Engineering Fair (NCSEF) on March 29, 2025, hosted at North Carolina State University.
