Students in Ms. Shannon Bass’s Computer Lab/Technology Class at Angier Elementary School learned to utilize technology to design and create a “talking leprechaun”.
They started this project learning about conductors, insulators, electrons, and circuits. They applied their knowledge to use a circuit board device with the computer.
They decorated a box to represent their leprechaun. Inside the box was a circuit board called a Makey Makey. The Makey Makey is a kit developed to connect objects to computer keys. By using a circuit board, alligator clips, and cable, the device uses closed loop signals to a computer that triggers a keyboard stroke or mouse click.
In this case, it signals the computer to play back a recorded message through a box as if the leprechaun was “talking”. The audio recording used was programmed by the students using their own voices recorded on a computer program called Scratch.
What a great way to learn and laugh!
