S.T.E.M. at Harnett County Schools
K-5 Principals and Directors for Harnett County Schools recently had the opportunity to learn more about the Building Engineers in K-5 Classrooms initiative. Principals participated in a sample STEM-infused literacy lesson featuring The 3 Little Pigs.
In this lesson, they listened to the story and then had to build their own house that the Big Bad Wolf couldn't knock down. Once the lesson was completed, Principals were asked the question "If ALL of your students experienced this kind of work regularly, what outcomes would you expect to see?"
Here are a few of the responses:
-Students would be engaged and could build problem-solving skills.
-Students would want to come to school.
-Learning would be fun. They would be engaged. Meet the needs of students who don’t respond well to paper-pencil work.
-I expect to see increased collaboration and better-developed critical thinking, communication skills, and problem-solving skills.
The statewide Building Engineers initiative represents a partnership between the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and SERVE's Region 6 Comprehensive Center. The goal of the project is to spread high-quality STEM programs throughout NC elementary schools, focused on utilizing the engineering design process in daily instruction.
The goal is to bring high-quality STEM practices to all elementary schools through the engineering design process (embedded with content and current pacing)and to create intentional links to 6-12+ outcomes that align with local strategic plans- ensuring equitable interest in available STEM pathways.
