Congratulations, Tucker Coombs! Tucker is a rising senior and Student Body President of Harnett Central High School, who was recently elected Governor, of Tar Heels Boys State and appointed to represent the state of North Carolina at Boys Nation, in Washington DC.
Tar Heels Boys State is a summer leadership session held by the American Legion. Since 1938, it has provided a forum where participants gain a deep understanding of model citizenship and civic leadership through a wide array of activities.
At Boys Nation, two representatives from each participating state will have the opportunity to act as a senator. Young lawmakers caucus, form committees, conduct hearings, handle bills in accordance with U.S. Senate rules. They will also host party conventions to nominate and elect a president and vice president.
Through Tar Heels Boys State and Boys Nation, the American Legion seeks to ensure that future generations have an intelligent, informed, and comprehensive understanding of our nation’s legacy of freedom and democracy. These sessions provide real experience in government, where students can learn about leadership and develop life-long friendships.
To be chosen to participate in this selective education program is an honor. To be elected governor and state delegate speaks volumes about Tucker Coombs and his leadership potential.
When asked about his experience, he said that “being a part of Tar Heel Boys State and serving as Governor was an incredible honor. Getting to know and work with high schoolers from all across North Carolina was truly inspiring. Through collaborative efforts and learning the art of compromise, we worked together to meet common goals. This experience taught me the power of unity and how, as young leaders, we can make a significant impact by working together for the betterment of our communities. I hope to bring the lessons from Boys State back to my school to continue to build a culture of collaboration and active citizenship among our student body.”
