CTE Month Spotlight: OHS Automotive

February is Career and Technical Education Month. Join is in celebrating CTE programs in Harnett County Schools!

The Overhills High School Automotive class taught by Mr. Kevin Williams is currently working on rebuilding an engine for a 1977 Chevy P30. The tasks involved with an engine re-build will give the students valuable hands-on experience that brings the course curriculum to life.

Mr. Williams is a certified ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) mechanic serving Harnett County Schools as an Automotive Service teacher for 10 years. He said that his decision to teach was led by his passion for youth mentorship. Mr. Williams teaches technical skills; alongside important life lessons to positively impact character development in his students.

OHS seniors, Bryson Vaughn and Da’Marcus Sing are both interested in pursuing a career in the automotive industry after graduating from high school.

Vaughn had some previous experience working on cars with his father, who served as a mechanic in the Army. He said that taking automotive service classes in high school has been very beneficial. He is exploring career options in the military and opening his own business one day.

Da’Marcus Sing also comes from a family line of mechanics. He plans to attend trade school after graduation, in pursuit of certifications in automotive service and/or welding. Sing dreams of enterprising an auto-body shop specializing in performance modifications and custom body wraps.

Both students stressed the importance of training for a career in trades. Bryson said “it’s hard work, yes… and maybe sometimes work that others don’t want to do, but it’s the stuff that keeps the world running. It’s important”. Da’Marcus recognizes the potential advantage of pursuing a career in trades. He said “trained plumbers, electricians, mechanics, and welders are in such high demand right now”, pursuing these career paths can be very lucrative.

Skilled trades are the backbone of modern society. We celebrate these pathways and are grateful for our CTE students, educators, and industry partners!
