Black History Month JES

In celebration of Black History Month, 4th grade students from Mr. Dubois class were challenged with a research project. Their task was to pick a notable African American from a list to conduct research, prepare, and create a visual presentation.

Student, Kassidy Terry said that she really liked this project. “It was so fun! My favorite part was learning about Matthew Henson. He was an African American explorer, and the first man to reach the North Pole”. She is looking forward to doing another one next year.

Classmate, Thiago Landero said the best part was going online to do research for this project. He picked Charles Drew, an African American doctor famous for his work with blood transfusions and blood banks. “It was really fun, I hope we do more projects like this.”

Jocelyn Morrison is an administrative assistant at Johnsonville. She said that she enjoyed seeing the presentations made by the students for Black History Month “Black History is American History and is celebrated 365 days a year.”

Mr. Jacques DuBois said that “Celebrating Black History Month provides the perfect opportunity to teach students about and appreciate the many contributions of African Americans that make United States of America what it is today. They can learn about influential figures that they may never even heard of”. Mr. Dubois has been serving in education for almost 19 years. He began his career as a Teacher Assistant for 16 years, then a middle school teacher for 2 ½ years. This is his first year at Harnett County Schools, and we are so grateful to have him at Johnsonville Elementary School.

Johnsonville Elementary School principal, Ms. Renee Gilmore is “very proud of the learning that has taken place and the effort that the students put in to complete their projects. Go Eaglets!”
