#WorldDiabetesDay : Lilly’s Story

Lilly Stone was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in May, at the age of 9. Some of her signs and symptoms included rapid weight loss, constant hunger, and paleness. The most challenging part for Lilly was understanding that she could no longer have the same treats as her classmates. Her family has learned to incorporate sugar-free options at home and in school. As a family, they have taken the team approach to help manage Lilly’s care. Even her little sister Maddie plays a role.

Lilly’s mom, Krystallyn says that the support they have received from Highland Elementary School has been amazing. She would like to thank the principal (DJ Pope), teacher (Mrs. Schliemann), guidance counselor (Mrs. Denton), and school nurses (Jenn and Kaitlyn), for making this difficult transition so much easier. She recalls how she “was ready face so many hardships especially with school, but this group of educators love my child and all the children in that school”.  Her teacher, Mrs. Schliemann has gone above and beyond by doing research on diabetes and attending trainings so that she could help administer Lilly’s daily shots of insulin.

Stay brave and unstoppable Lilly! Thank you for sharing your story with us.
