North Carolina has the second highest population of Native Americans east of the Mississippi river. There are over 9 indigenous tribes in North Carolina: Coharie, Cherokee, Haliwa-Saponi, Lumbee, Meherrin, Occaneechi Band of Saponi, Sappony, Waccamaw, and Siouan.
