Thank you, Kaylan, Abbigail, and Makhiya from Overhills Middle School, for leading the Pledge of Allegiance at the Board of Education meeting last night and highlighting your experience with Battle of the Books Club, sponsored by Ms. Crissman.
Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program. Participants read 15-24 books and practice to prepare for competition. Students compete by displaying their understanding of the selected books. In a tournament setting, competitors are challenged to practice rapid recall to match book titles and authors to facts.
Kaylan Curry says that participating in Battle of the Books has helped improve her critical thinking, comprehension, and retention skills.
Makhiya Sellers talked about how she enjoyed the social aspects of Battle of the Books. She described it as a fun way to make new friends and get to know people through in-depth discussions. She says that it was “like being one big family”.
Abbigail Jones said that the reading list challenged them to read books that they may not necessarily choose for themselves. This broadens their scope as readers and working as a team pushes them to get through the work even when it is difficult.
We wish all the Battle of the Books contenders in the district the best of luck in the upcoming district and regional competitions!
